Editor:

I see where an overwhelming majority of UN members, including nations basically friendly to Israel, have expressed disapproval of President Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The general feeling is that it will hinder prospects for Israeli/Palestinian peace. Which it will.

Doesn't have to be that way. The Netanyahu government could have been magnanimous and said Jerusalem could be the capitals of both Israel and an independent Palestinian state -- one comprising the entire West Bank and Gaza Strip areas. All but the most hardline Palestinians would have agreed to that.

But no. The Israeli right has no intention of sharing Jerusalem with the dispossessed Palestinians, or even letting them have their own viable state. Let them live in reservations while Jews control the West Bank and Jerusalem forever, and keep Gaza -- in cooperation with Egypt -- as the world's biggest open-air prison.
