Editor:

Why is America still in Afghanistan?

Some observers have asked, sensibly enough, how President Trump's rather modest increase of U.S. troops there, bringing the total to about 12,000, will win a victory that eluded us when over 100,000 U.S. troops were there.

An even better question is "Why didn't America, with help from several NATO allies, decisively defeat the technologically third-rate Taliban within three years of its October 2001 invasion?"

It's a case of either gross military incompetence or Washington not wanting to win -- wanting to drag the war out as long as possible to ensure greater profits for the military/industrial complex.
