Wyoming representatives passed a bill, written by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) that blatantly violates every Wyomingites First Amendment right. In addition, the bill was passed, unscrupulously, by legislators ignoring the legislatures own rules on committee votes. Why, you ask? Because corrupt legislators were unhappy with the first vote in the House Minerals Committee in which the bill DID NOT PASS! This bill abolishes your rights to assemble and peacefully protest oil and gas projects in Wyoming. Eli Bebout is a senior sponsor of this bill. He’s also the president of an oil company. This isn’t the first time Bebout has pursued his self-interest over Wyomingites.
To name a few examples: He’s advocated changing Wyoming’s constitution to accommodate public land grab attempts; and he’s supported putting a nuclear waste dump in Wyoming. He continually represents his self-interest rather than the interests of the citizens of Wyoming.
Who paid ALEC to draft this legislation? Do they care if pipelines and drilling rigs are in our national forest wilderness land, state parks or favorite recreation areas? Wyoming law makers do not care. This bill is a pure representation of oppression by the rich and powerful. I’m in support of businesses coming to Wyoming, but not at any price. We are the stewards of this land. A bill that makes illegal our right to protest to protect it should never be signed into law.
