In the Jan. 10, paper there was an article on tobacco. Yes, I lost my wife to cancer and, yes, she smoked. I smoked for years until I learned it was harmful, so I stopped. She didn’t. Why, I don’t know as this was before people were told it was hard to quit.
I know how easy it is to not do what we should. I’ve had both knees worked on, one in 2007 and the other in 2008, and I don’t exercise as I should. The difference is tobacco is a product, while not exercising is dumb. Only one can be controlled by law, like marijuana.
Why do we allow even one person to be killed by any method? If a person shoots a gun and kills another they will be punished. If you don’t wear your seatbelt you get a fine. Our leaders won’t even tax tobacco as much as other states do. Why not? Is it payola?
Now here’s my stupid idea to reduce the number of deaths caused by using tobacco.
We treat the purchase of tobacco items the same as buying a gun. Background checks, etc. then allow only so much a month. Say one pack of 20 twice a month, one cigar a week, two small cans of chew or any other purchase of 2 ounces or less and one E-cig a week.
So I asked all my friends for advice and they both agreed it’s stupid but they also said that anyone proven to have provided a tobacco product to an underage individual should get a prison sentence with a felony. I agree.
