SUGARLOAF, Maine - Back-to-back, without a doubt.

Buoyed by Jennifer Kinner's clean sweep and exceptional overall depth, the University of Wyoming women's Nordic ski team won its second consecutive title on Saturday at the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association national championships.

"The women were simply awesome. They stamped their mark during the first race and never looked back," UW coach Christi Boggs said in a release prepared by the UW News Service. "Jennifer won all the individual events, and if someone had a bad race, the next girl would just step up and move on.

"Putting five women in the top eight overall is absolutely amazing."

Kinner won last week's 1-kilometer skate sprint race, 15K classic and 8.5K skate interval. She also won all three individual events last year.

The senior from Casper also helped lead the Cowgirls to first place in Saturday's 3x5K relay event with a time of 50 minutes, 39 seconds. Other relay team members were Brooke Umphlett, a senior from Casper, and Kristen Boroff, a junior from Pinedale.

Kinner was named the USCSSA's top overall individual skier for the second consecutive year.

UW won the team crown at the national club-level championships with 33 points, followed by Clarkson College of Potsdam, N.Y., with 69 and Cornell 94.

In addition to Kinner, the Cowgirls' other All-Americans were Boroff, who finished third overall; Melissa Gangl, a freshman from Casper, who claimed fourth; Umphlett, seventh; and Erika Edgely, a junior from Lake Placid, N.Y., eighth.

On the men's side, the Cowboys wound up third in the nation. Clarkson won with 36 points followed by Cornell with 76 and UW 92.

Clarkson won the men's relay in 41:54. UW came in third with a 44:02.

Riley Hopeman, a junior from Lander, led three Cowboys who notched All-American status. He was the fifth-highest scoring individual among the men at the national meet. Justin Daraie, a junior from Casper, claimed seventh, and Joshua Peterson, a freshman from Lander, took 10th.

Hopeman, Daraie and Peterson comprised the Cowboys' relay team.

UW men's and women's team members also earned Academic All-American honors and combined with UW's women's Alpine ski team to win the President's Award, which goes to the school with the best combined Nordic and Alpine results.

First-team academic honorees included Peterson, Boroff and Ava Bell, a sophomore from Laramie. Umphlett earned second-team academic honors while Gangl and Daraie were given honorable mention status.

Brandie Yeik, a sophomore from Eagle, Colo., was the only UW Alpine skier to finish both giant slalom runs, placing 39th.

In the slalom, Yeik was 56th.

In the men's Alpine competition, Nicholas Houfek, a sophomore from Big Piney, was the Cowboys' top finisher at 60th.
