LOGAN, Utah - Evanston native Jaycee Carroll has had quite a week against the Beehive State's Mountain West Conference basketball teams.

Carroll scored seven straight points on three shots to give Utah State a 15-point cushion at the 12-minute, 8-second mark of the second half, and the Aggies went on to stun the Utah Utes 71-45 on Saturday.

Carroll wound up with 18 points for Utah State (5-1) of the Big West Conference.

On Wednesday, he had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the Aggies' 71-57 victory over the visiting Brigham Young Cougars.

Spencer Nelson led Utah State with 21 points. Nate Harris added 20 points on nine-of-12 shooting.

The game was tight until Carroll made his seven-point run.

Andrew Bogut led Utah (4-2) with 15 points. Marc Jackson, who had 15 points, fronted the Utes in scoring in the first half with three-of-four shooting from the 3-point arc. But Utah State held the guard to two points in the second half.

Carroll shot one basket from well outside the 3-point arc as the clock expired in the second half, giving Utah State the first double-digit lead of the game.

The Aggies' offense was able to draw the 7-foot Bogut away from the basket in the second half, giving Nelson and Harris seven layups.

Utah State ended up shooting 82 percent from the field in the second half, 65 percent for the game, while the Utes shot 41 percent in the game.

The Aggies scored first in a defense-dominated first half, but the Utes led most of the way until an 8-2 run late in the half by Utah State pushed it to a 32-28 halftime edge.

Harris dropped in a 2-foot jump shot at the 6:30 mark to give the lead to Utah State for good at 22-21. A steal by Nelson gave teammate David Pak a breakaway layup, and a lob to Harris then stretched the Aggies' lead to 26-21.

Jackson led Utah with 13 points in the first half. Bogut, averaging 18 points per game, was held to six points in the first half.

This was the 217th game for the rivals. Utah State has won five of the last seven meetings, though Utah holds the overall edge 127-90.
