University of Wyoming junior Ja'la Henderson successfully defended the triple jump gold she earned during the indoor season, winning the event at the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Clovis, California, late Saturday. Henderson's leap of 43 feet, 10.5 inches surpassed her old school record by two inches.

Henderson is the first outdoor triple jump champion the Cowgirls have had since 1988. Henderson's win stood out among mediocre finishes from the Cowgirls, who finished 11th in the team results. The Cowboys placed fifth.

William Nolan led the Cowboys by finishing second in the triple jump with a personal-best 48-feet-9.5.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls both wait to see who qualifies for the NCAA West Preliminary Round, which takes place May 24-26 in Sacramento, California.
