The University of Wyoming women's golf team is in eighth place after the first round of the Mountain West Championship in Rancho Mirage, California, behind freshman Erin Sargent's 74 over the first 18 holes.

Sargent, whose first round was just two-over par, is currently tied for 17th. Sophomore Megan Knadler sits three shots behind her teammate and is tied for 30th after the first day. Tied for 33rd is Gabrielle Gibson, Sarah Hankins sits tied for 35th and senior Mackenzie Barrie is tied for 44th.

The Cowgirls are just one shot ahead of Colorado State in the nine-team tournament with a combined score of 310, while San Diego State, UNLV and New Mexico are all tied for the lead with 287.

Second-round tee-offs begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
