Wyoming junior guard Justin James picked up his second first-team all-conference honor in as many days Tuesday when the Mountain West coaches' all-conference awards were announced.
James was also voted first-team all-conference by Mountain West media, as was Wyoming senior Hayden Dalton. Dalton was a second-team honoree by the conference's coaches. Wyoming senior Alan Herndon was named to the coaches' all-defense team.
Nevada's Caleb Martin was named the Mountain West player of the year by the coaches, an honor the media gave to Boise State's Chandler Hutchison. The coaches named Nevada's Cody Martin the defensive player of the year, an award Herndon earned from the media. The coaches selected Boise State’s Alex Hobbs as the sixth man of the year over Wyoming's Lou Adams, who received the award from the media.
As with the media, the coaches voted Nevada's Eric Musselman Mountain West coach of the year and Caleb Martin the newcomer of the year. It is the first time in conference history that the same team has swept player, defensive player, newcomer and coach of the year honors. UNLV forward Brandon McCoy was recognized as freshman of the year, by both media and the coaches.
James was a third-team honoree last year, and Dalton was voted honorable mention.
The coaches' first team consisted of Hutchison, Fresno State's Deshon Taylor, Nevada's Jordan Caroline, Caleb Martin and James. The second team included Cody Martin, San Diego State's Malik Pope, UNLV's Shakur Juiston and Brandon McCoy, and Dalton. The third-team selections were Fresno State's Bryson Williams, Nevada's Kendall Stephens, New Mexico's Anthony Mathis, and Utah State's Koby McEwen and Sam Merrill. Colorado State's Nico Carvacho, New Mexico's Antino Jackson, San Diego State's Jalen McDaniels and San Jose State's Ryan Welage were named honorable mention.
Hutchison, Taylor, Nevada's Lindsey Drew, Cody Martin, Jackson and Herndon comprised the all-defense team.
