Girls

KELLY WALSH 46, MANDAN, N.D., 29: On Wednesday, the Trojans secured the consolation championship behind another big game from Kayla Fakelman and an inspired defensive effort in the second half.

Fakelman scored 24 points and had 16 rebounds to lead KW (5-3); she also had a 10-for-12 effort from the foul line. KW also held Mandan to just five points in the second half and only one point in the fourth quarter, as the Trojans had a 37-15 rebounding edge for the game.

"We were down 9-0 to start the game," KW coach Pat Scissons said. " … I really felt like once we took control of the game, they could kind of smell the kill and went for the jugular."

Emily Rochelle added 13 assists, five steals and seven rebounds, Bailey Kremke added 10 points and Lauren Hoppe had eight for KW. Defensively, the Trojans held Mandan to 2-of-26 shooting in the second half.

"Once we got (the lead) to eight or 10, they were looking to shoot it pretty quick, and they were contested, but the rebounding, that was huge," Scissons said.

Ali Collins led Mandan with 12 points.

The Trojans return to the floor Jan. 9 on the road against Billings Skyview, Mont.

GILLETTE 61, BISHOP GORMAN, NEV., 60: On Wednesday, the Camels won the Energy Classic championship by rallying past the Gaels.

Gillette (9-2) trailed 26-18 at halftime but fought back in the third quarter, outscoring Bishop Gorman 24-17. Jordan Kent led Gillette with 21 points.

Boys

KELLY WALSH 50, BISMARCK, N.D., 38: On Wednesday, the Trojans won the consolation title thanks to some tough defense and a solid all-around effort from Cobi Eskew.

Ewskew scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had six blocks as the Trojans (4-4) held Bismarck to just five points in the first and fourth quarters. A quick start gave KW a 16-5 lead after one quarter, and Bismarck never came close to the lead from there on out.

"I think we've kind of found our identity," KW coach Scott Marietta said. "We found when we play defense we're a pretty good basketball team."

Lucas Nolan added 11 points for KW and Joe Munsell scored eight as the Trojans only had four turnovers.

Jalen Finley fronted Bismarck with 13.

KW finished the week 2-1 and will be off until hosting Billings Skyview, Mont., on Jan. 9.

"We were very please with what we accomplished" this week, Marietta said.
