Class 2A
Thermopolis vs. Glenrock, 2 p.m., Friday
Twenty-five points.
That was Glenrock's average margin of victory during the regular season, but here's the kicker for the Class 2A title game. The Herders' closest game of the year was a 32-26 Week 3 win over Thermopolis, a game that wasn't decided until Glenrock scored the go-ahead touchdown with nine seconds left in the game.
So what does that portend in a rematch for the 2A title? The game features two teams with entirely opposite offensive styles. The Thermopolis spread attack led 2A in passing offense, while the Glenrock double-wing option attack led 2A in rushing. And both teams have been playing even better toward the end of the season.
Glenrock looked dominant in its 38-7 quarterfinal win over Big Piney and likewise in its 28-7 semifinal win over Greybull. Thermopolis has developed a solid running game to complement its aerial circus, but the Bobcats' defense has been their biggest asset in the playoffs. They blanked Big Piney 25-0 in the quarterfinals and held a Kemmerer team that averaged more than 400 yards of total offense during the regular season to just 257 in their 33-13 semifinal win over the Rangers.
It isn't the rematch everyone expected at the beginning of the season, but it still looks to be quite a game.
