Wide receiver commits to Wyoming
Mazi Ogbonna , a junior college wide receiver, has verbally committed to Wyoming. Ogbonna says he will transfer from Snow College in Utah.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Ogbonna visited the UW campus over the weekend and said he liked the overall atmosphere at Wyoming and believes the football program is on the rise.
Ogbonna has caught 32 passes for 678 yards and eight touchdowns in helping Snow College to an overall 9-1 record and a share of the Western States Football League crown. Ogbonna was born in New York although his parents are native Nigerians. He played his prep ball at Hicksville High School in Westbury, N.Y.
Affidavit: Remarks on woman led to UConn killing
An arrest warrant affidavit says the fight that led to the stabbing death of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard began when one of his teammates "disrespected" a woman at a school-sponsored dance.
The affidavit released Tuesday accuses a 21-year-old Bloomfield man, John Lomax, of murder in the Oct. 18 killing of Howard. The document includes an array of witness statements about the encounter.
Howard's teammate, Michael Smith, told investigators that Howard threw a punch at a man matching Lomax's description before he was stabbed.
The affidavit also says Johnny Hood, one of six men charged in the case, told police that the fight began when another man, later identified as football player Brian Parker, made comments about a woman at the dance.
Collaros will start, Pike will play
Quarterback Zach Collaros will start for fifth-ranked Cincinnati against West Virginia on Friday night, with Tony Pike expected to play as well for the first time since he hurt his non-throwing arm.
Coach Brian Kelly announced Collaros as his starter Tuesday. The sophomore has started the last three games and kept the Bearcats undefeated. He threw for 480 yards -- the second-highest total in school history -- during a win over Connecticut on Saturday night.
Pike had to have a plate in his left forearm replaced after it was injured Oct. 15. Kelly said the senior quarterback will get into the game against West Virginia. The Bearcats then have a bye, and Pike is expected to start on Nov. 27 against Illinois.
Iowa QB Stanzi doubtful for final 2 games
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says junior quarterback Ricky Stanzi has had surgery to repair a severely sprained ankle and is "very doubtful" for Iowa's final two regular season games.
Stanzi injured his right ankle in the second quarter of No. 15 Iowa's 17-10 loss to Northwestern last weekend and did not return.
Ferentz says redshirt freshman James Vandenberg is now the No. 1 quarterback for the Hawkeyes. He will make his first career start Saturday at No. 10 Ohio State.
Blount reinstated, but Ducks won't alter offense
Don't expect Oregon's offense, averaging a conference-leading 36.3 points a game, to change much with the reinstatement of tailback LeGarrette Blount for Saturday's game against Arizona State.
"LeGarrette Blount is coming back in a backup role," Coach Chip Kelly said. "I'm not even sure how we'll deploy him."
Only Toby Gerhart of Stanford has gained more yards than Blount's replacement, LaMichael James. The freshman is averaging 115 yards a game and has rushed for 1,043 yards this season.
Baseball
Jeter, Teixeira win Gold Gloves; Mauer honored
Derek Jeter has won his fourth Gold Glove at shortstop, joining New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League players honored for fielding excellence.
Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter and Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki both won for the ninth straight year.
First-time winners Tuesday included Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, Baltimore outfielder Adam Jones and White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle.
Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco each earned their second Rawlings Gold Glove Award. National League winners will be announced today.
Swimming
Phelps third in 100 medley, misses two finals
Sporting a beard and an old-style swimsuit, Michael Phelps finished third in the 100-meter medley at a World Cup short-course meet after missing out on two other finals Tuesday.
Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, swam the medley final in 52.14 seconds. South Africa's Gerhard Zandberg won in 51.77.
Earlier Tuesday, Phelps failed to qualify for the finals of the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, in which he was disqualified for swimming too long under water.
The 24-year-old American, who was competing for the first time since the world championships in August, wore the type of suit that will become the standard next year. Most other swimmers used faster high-tech suits.
After the race, he told reporters he was excited to be back racing.
"I know I'm not in the best shape and I should be in better shape," Phelps said. "I didn't hit my first wall right, so it's kind of disappointing but I'm happy overall."
Phelps said before the meet he wanted to use the competition in Stockholm to test his form and the old-style swimsuit. Today, Phelps will swim in the 100 butterfly and 200 medley heats.
