Indians return to championship for first time since 2006
CHEYENNE -- Brick Cegelski preached defensive pressure to his Cheyenne Central defensive linemen in practice all week long.
Gillette quarterback Alan Sisel had to deal with the consequences.
The Indians sacked Sisel nine times on Friday and held the Camels to minus-13 net yards rushing in a 27-10 Class 4A semifinal victory at Riske Field.
Central will play Sheridan a week from today in Laramie in the 4A championship.
"Our defense front seven played a little bit better than their [offensive front], and that might've been the difference in the game," Cegelski said. " ... Our biggest thing was we put a lot of pressure on Sisel and never let them get in a rhythm.
"That's what we wanted to do. We wanted to put pressure on him every play."
Sisel also completed only 10 of his 25 pass attempts and was intercepted twice by an opportunistic Central defense that capitalized on every opportunity to smash the quarterback.
"Even if we weren't able to make the sack, we'd roll him back into another [defender]," Central defensive end Hayden Jones said.
The Indians (9-2) allowed only 103 net yards on Gillette's 53 plays. The Camels (7-4) had only one play go for more than 15 yards.
Even so, the Camels defense played tough as well and held Central to less than 200 yards of total offense. Consistently, however, Gillette was on the wrong side of the field-position battle.
"The kids fought tooth and nail and never gave up on anything," Gillette coach Vic Wilkerson said.
The early points were set up by turnovers -- and also gave Central the momentum early, something the Indians never let slip to the Camels.
Central dodged an early bullet after fumbling inside its own 5-yard line. The Indians held the Camels out on three plays, and Gillette had to settle for a 20-yard field goal from Jordan Rueschhoff to take an early 3-0 lead.
Gillette wasn't as fortunate. An interception by Josh Borm deep in Camel territory late in the first quarter led to an easy six-yard pitch-and-catch from Connor Long to Kyle Grott and Central led 7-3.
Michael Davis scored twice and Borm added a pair of field goals for Central, which will be playing in the state title game for the first time since winning it all in 2006.
