John Hamrick saw this coming decades ago.

Watching sons Corey and Mark go through his wrestling program at Wheatland, John Hamrick didn't see simply two great wrestlers. He saw two future head coaches.

Tuesday's dual between Sheridan and Kelly Walsh was simply the manifestation of what the elder Hamrick saw coming even before Corey and Mark were in their teens.

"They were coaching when they were 12, 13 years old," he said, "helping with my 6- and 7-year-olds in the little kid program.

"It's just something in their blood."

In their first dual meeting on opposite sides as head coaches, older brother Corey got the best of younger brother Mark on Tuesday, as Sheridan notched a 37-19 victory at KWHS Gym.

The brothers were teammates at Wheatland and later at Wyoming. They've been on opposite sides for a few years now, with Corey entering his eighth year at Sheridan - fourth as head coach - and Mark in his third year at Kelly Walsh, this his first as head coach.

"It's always fun," Corey Hamrick said. "We were able to wrestle each other for so many years, little kids all the way through college."

Their coaching styles are far from identical, though. Corey is the more manic coach - long periods of quiet followed by an eruption of intensity and rapid-fire instruction at key moments - while Mark is generally more even-keeled and slower, but consistently louder, with his words.

Even so, they both exhibit the same sort of intensity as coaches that made them successful as wrestlers, which eventually will make them successful as coaches.

The family remains close, but they rarely trade tips on wrestling. Instead, when they talk coaching, they talk about off-the-mat details like trip itineraries and adolescent psychology.

"He always keeps me updated," Mark Hamrick said. "We talk daily. We're a real tight family."

Corey Hamrick said the similar nature of the two programs - both trying to build consistency through every weight and against Class 4A's top teams - helps the brothers identify with each other. After the first practices of the season, even then, he said the two coaches were unconsciously trying to point their teams the same way.

"It's eerie how similar our practices were and even what we told the kids," he said.

For now, Corey has the 1-0 lead in duals.

Not that anyone, especially dad, is counting.

"You're proud of your kids," John Hamrick said. "You don't root for any one (child), you just hope for the best when they step on the mat."

SHERIDAN 37, KELLY WALSH 19: The Broncs picked up pins from Jacob Smith, Jay Sandvig, Jake Reimers, Devan Reilly and Sam Barney to knock off the Trojans.

KW won four weight classes, with David Giralt notching the Trojans' lone pin. Three weight classes were open for both teams.

Mark Hamrick said KW has been practicing twice a day during the holiday break, but he said fatigue wasn't an excuse.

"They just went out there flat," the KW coach said. " … There were kids that had a lot more fight in them that didn't show it."

KW is off the rest of this week.
