HARRIS PLACES THIRD: Green River's Seth Harris placed third in Class 4A's 119-pound weight class. Harris, last year's 103-pound champion, forfeited his first round match to Natrona County's Jessica Brenton because he doesn't believe in wrestling girls.

With the forfeit, third place was the best the Green River senior could finish.

"It was fun," Harris said. "It was a good way to end it."

Harris said it was tough at first to sacrifice the chance at a second title, but that he wanted to stick by his morals.

"I made the right decision," Harris said.

Harris beat Cheyenne Central's Leandro Arias 5-0.

DANA FINISHES FIFTH: Star Valley's Dakota Dana placed fifth in Class 4A's 130-pound weight class.

Dana beat Green River's Brady Turnbull 5-0.

Both Dana's mother and father died as a result of a car accident while they were on their way home from the Ron Thon Memorial Invitational in Riverton earlier this month. His brother was also in the accident and is still in an intensive care unit. Dana said he continues to wrestle because that's what his family would want.

"Some people didn't expect me to wrestle, but it felt good to get back out there and win my last match," Dana said.

EARLY CHAMP: The Wyoming State High School Association Wrestling Championship finals matches weren't scheduled to start until 6:30 p.m., but that didn't stop Powell's Renn Utter from winning the Class 3A 103-pound title before the start of Saturday's competition.

Utter's opponent, Torrington freshman Thomas Carr, failed to meet his weight requirement at the morning weigh-in and was disqualified.

Powell coach Nate Urbach said Utter asked if he could wrestle Carr as an exhibition.

"He was disappointed," Urbach said. "He wanted to win it on the mat."

Carr was the No. 1 seed from the East, while Utter was the No. 1 seed from the West.

DUBOIS COACH RETIRES: Pat Ballinger retired as Dubois' coach after the conclusion of Saturday's Wyoming State High School Wrestling Championships.

Ballinger coached the Rams for 31 years.

"It's time for some new blood," Ballinger said. "I've had my fun over the years. I've had 31 good years. It's time for someone else to come in and do the job, and time for me to do something else."

Ballinger said his favorite memory was going to the state meet each year.

GOING FOR FOUR: Torrington's Jared Hatley and Greybull-Riverside's Kasey Garnhart went for their fourth individual titles on Saturday night.

They are trying to become the 10th and 11th wrestlers in the Wyoming State High School Wrestling Championships history to win an individual title in each of their four years of high school.

Hatley has won titles in Class 3A 119-, 135-, and 140-pound weight classes. He competed at 152 this year.

Garnhart has 2A titles in the 130-, 140-, and 135-pound weight classes. He competed at 135 this year.

GOING FOR THREE: Four wrestlers went for their third titles on Saturday.

In Class 2A, Cokeville's Rodney Teichert (125) has won titles in the 103- and 112-pound weight classes, and Greybull-Riverside's Colten Zier (145) has titles at 130 and 140. Zier placed second at 119 his freshman year.

In Class 4A, Gillette's Tyler Cox (112) and Star Valley's Ricky Fairbanks (119) are also going for triple titles. Cox, a junior, has championships at 103 and 112. Fairbanks, a senior, won Class 3A's 103-pound title his freshman year for Jackson, and won at 119 for Star Valley last year.

CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCHES: Lander's Cody Brunty and Wheatland's Cody Powers faced off for the second year in a row in Class 3A's 285-weight class final.

Cokeville's Devan Pope and Southeast's Stephen Easton are also wrestling in the finals for the second year in row. They competed at 189 in Class 2A.

BATTLE OF CHAMPIONS: Natrona County's Briston Brenton and Star Valley's Zack Walker met in the Class 3A 140-pound weight class. Brenton won the class 4A 130 title last year, while Walker won Class 3A's 135 crown.

UNLUCKY CHARM: Greybull-Riverside's four cheerleaders, who all go to Greybull, were wearing headbands with blue bunny ears on them.

"They are for good luck," Becky DeHo, one of the cheerleaders, said. "Our boys are playing basketball and if they win they go to State and we get to go."

The cheerleaders' headbands didn't help the Buffs. Greybull lost to Riverside in the Class 2A West Regional consolation semifinals.
