Jordan Merback will end her high school track career the same way she started it - as the Class 4A triple jump champion.
Barely.
Merback's winning jump on Friday of 38 feet, 7 3/4 inches was good enough to win the 4A title at the Wyoming State High School Track and Field Championships, but only by 1/2 inch.
Saving her best for last, Merback's last jump was good enough to nudge Moore's best jump of 38-7 1/4.
After winning state as a freshman but losing to Moore the past two years, Merback was amped up for this one.
"I've wanted it so bad," she said. "It might be my last time triple-jumping, ever.
"I knew what it'd take to do it, and right before I jumped, I said, 'This is it.'"
The win culminated three years of fierce triple-jump competition between Merback and Moore.
"She's a great jumper," Merback said. "She's always my No. 1 competition. I think we jump our best when we're going against each other."
The KW girls needed a few more finishes like that to keep pace in the team race, though. The Trojans were fifth after the second day with 31 team points.
The KW boys were fourth in 4A team standings with 33.5 points.
n NC SWEEPS RELAYS…: Michael Mounce began celebrating long before Mario Harris crossed the finish line.
The third leg on the Natrona County boys' 400 relay, Mounce handed the baton to Harris - the anchor leg - then began pumping his fist in the air.
The Mustangs won the relay with a time of 42.51 seconds. Zach Powell and Josh Maddox ran the first two legs.
The win helped NC stay in the team race. The Mustangs have 55 points and are in third place after the second day; Gillette leads with 71 points and Cheyenne Central is second with 60.
The boys' win cemented an NC sweep in the 4x1 relay, as the NC girls won their race in 49.92 seconds.
Staylee Brown, Brystal Keser, Kayla Propes and Meghan Snell made up the Fillies' winning relay.
n … AND GIBSON SWEEPS THROWS: Baillie Gibson is two-for-two.
Kaylee Beddes kept her trend going.
And between the two of them, they scored 18 key points for the Natrona County Fillies.
Gibson and Beddes took the top two spots in the 4A girls discus on Friday, with Gibson winning with a throw of 145 feet, 3 inches.
Beddes was second at 136 feet, 4 inches.
"The whole year, that was our goal, (and) score some big points for the team, too," Beddes said.
While Gibson had the winning throw on her first attempt, Beddes waited until her last throw of the finals to wrap up second. Beddes said the throw continued an encouraging trend.
"I've been to state four years in a row, and I've always (thrown my best) at state," she said.
As for the Fillies, the points were critical for them to keep pace with Cheyenne Central in the team race.
Central led after the second day of the meet with 71 points, while the Filles were second at 67.
Rock Springs was third with 43 points.
