Class 4A

East Conference

Cheyenne Central Indians

n COACH: Mike Jackson

n LAST SEASON: 19-9, second in East Conference, consolation champs at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1998

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Central had five seniors on last year's team, so the potential is there for another good season.

Cheyenne East Thunderbirds

n COACH: Damon Artery (fourth season, 54-28)

n LAST SEASON: 11-18, third in East Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2006

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters. Seth Ganison (5-8, sr, G); Shane Potter (6-1, sr, G); Colby Harrison (6-6, jr, P); Casey Mayer (6-6, sr, P); Adam Gross (6-2, sr, F).

n OUTLOOK: The Thunderbirds have a lot going in their favor this winter - they're quick and big and have the right kind of work ethic for 4A hoops. Depth and consistency on both ends of the floor are still weaknesses right now, though, but if those come along as hoped East will be a tough team to beat.

Gillette Camels

n COACH: Michael Curry (26th season, 486-133)

n LAST SEASON: 24-4, first in East Conference, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: One starter, seven letterwinners. Spencer Bruce (6-6, sr, F); Cameron Anderson (6-5, sr, F); Thomas Burleson (5-5, sr, G); Matt Gross (5-9, sr, G); Garrett Heusinkveld (6-1, sr, F); Matt Mordecai (6-4, jr, G); Kellen Smith (6-4, sr, F).

n OUTLOOK: Five of the Camels' seven returners have extensive varsity experience, but past that Gillette doesn't have much experience. Those younger and less experienced players have to contribute - and the experienced players need to keep improving - for the Camels to repeat.

Laramie Plainsmen

n COACH: Jason Mountain

n LAST SEASON: 8-20, fourth in East Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1985

n KEY RETURNERS: Dan Estes (5-10, jr); Karsten Hiser (6-0, sr); Dan Nachtigal (5-11, sr); Mason Orcutt (6-3, sr); Jordan Rhodine (6-4, sr); Allen West (6-3, sr).

n OUTLOOK: The Plainsmen have an interesting mix of young and old - five seniors - and guard and post play. There isn't a ton of height, as Rhodine is the tallest at 6-4, but the guard play is strong and should lead the Plainsmen again this winter.

Riverton Wolverines

n COACH: Steve Barlow

n LAST SEASON: 4-20, sixth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2004

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Wolverines have made state just once since 1998, so overcoming past near-misses will be the first priority.

Sheridan Broncs

n COACH: Mike Ibach

n LAST SEASON: 3-19, fifth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2003

n KEY RETURNERS: Justin Will (5-9, sr, G); Austin Woodward (6-2, jr, F); T.J. Stender (6-2, jr, F).

n OUTLOOK: The Broncs are young - only two seniors are on the roster - so the underclassmen will need to fill in right away and provide the type of depth needed to compete in 4A. There's plenty of potential, though, and good things can happen if the team continues to progress.

West Conference

Evanston Red Devils

n COACH: Bubba O'Neill

n LAST SEASON: 18-11, T-second in West Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2004

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Evanston has been consistently successful, making state every year since 2000, but there are big holes to fill this winter.

Green River Wolves

n COACH: Rick Carroll (10th season, 19th overall, 240-203)

n LAST SEASON: 17-11, T-second in West Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1987

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, 11 letterwinners. Mike James (6-0, sr); Andrew Meredith (6-0, sr); Drew Martinez (6-0, jr); Mitch Roberts (6-5, sr); Trent Williams (6-1, sr); Preston Antilla (5-7, sr); Kyle Siddoway (5-9, sr); Nick Hastert (6-3, sr); Colter Rood (6-1, jr).

n OUTLOOK: The Wolves are quick, strong, hard-working and experienced - and that's quite a mix. Overall height and depth are still concerns, as are nagging football injuries, but if depth improves and injuries are avoided, Green River has a chance to be one of 4A's top teams.

Kelly Walsh Trojans

n COACH: Scott Marietta (second season)

n LAST SEASON: 2-19, fifth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1981

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters. Cobi Eskew (6-6, sr, P); Joe Munsell (5-11, sr, G); Luke Nolan (6-0, jr, G); Clint Becker (6-2, sr, G); Casey Brauchie (6-4, sr, P); Tom Manning (6-3, jr, P); Kendall Hutchinson (6-0, sr, G).

n OUTLOOK: The Trojans have a decent number of returning players, and with another year to learn the system expectations are higher this winter. KW has good athleticism and could be tough to beat once the questions about depth and experience can be resolved.

Natrona County Mustangs

n COACH: Randy Roden (eighth season, 165-41)

n LAST SEASON: 24-2, first in West Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2007

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, nine letterwinners. Michael Dietz (6-6, sr); Tom Earl (6-2, sr); Mario Harris (6-3, sr); Max Gustafson (6-4, sr); A.D. Boatright (5-11, sr); Zach Powell (5-10, sr); Ryan Murphy (5-11, sr); Cam Loe (6-0, sr); Jordan Dick (6-2, so).

n OUTLOOK: With three starters coming back for their third year - and three other players who have started at some point in their careers - NC is primed for another deep postseason run. The team is experienced, athletic and deep. But at times, the Mustangs' shooting can be streaky, and they need to make sure to stay focused game-to-game.

Rock Springs Tigers

n COACH: Mike Swenson

n LAST SEASON: 19-11, T-second in West Conference, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1976

n KEY RETURNERS: Jeff Hawks (6-2, sr, C); Wes Padilla (6-0, jr, G); Austin Prevedel (6-1, sr, G/F).

n OUTLOOK: What Rock Springs has in speed and quickness, it lacks in height and experience. And that's where the Tigers find themselves - they have solid guard play, but with no one taller than 6-2, and only three players back from last year's runner-up team, gaining experience and understanding roles is paramount.

Star Valley Braves

n COACH: Mark Taylor (first season, 11th overall)

n LAST SEASON: 2-19, sixth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2007

n KEY RETURNERS: Six letterwinners. Tyler Schwab (6-1, sr, F); Jonathan Scherbel (6-1, sr, F); Nate Imeson (6-3, sr, C); Jordan Ealey (5-9, sr, G); Brandon Taylor (6-0, jr, G); David Cranford (6-0, jr, F).

n OUTLOOK: Star Valley is playing for its third coach in three years, so there might be some early growing pains. Once the Braves learn the system - and continue to make the improvements needed to play in Class 4A - they could have a chance to knock off some of the big dogs.

Class 3A

East Conference

Buffalo Bison

n COACH: Paul Prosinski (sixth season, 104-22, 28th overall)

n LAST SEASON: 24-2, first in East Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2006

n KEY RETURNERS: Ryan Kinzer (5-9, sr, G); Dan Long (6-1, sr, F); Robby Trabing (6-3, sr, F); Damon Filbert (6-4, jr, C); Ryan Graham (5-10, jr, G).

n OUTLOOK: Kinzer and Trabing were both all-conference players but both are injured and will be out until at least January. That might be a hidden blessing for the Bison, though, who need to develop some depth in order to stay competitive in a tight East Conference.

Douglas Bearcats

n COACH: Ron Erickson (ninth season, 172-64, 27th overall, 401-219)

n LAST SEASON: 9-16, seventh in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2002

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, seven letterwinners. Cody Bohlander (5-9, sr, G); Daniel Hancock (6-0, sr, G); Jon Studie (6-1, sr, P); Shane Richendifer (6-0, sr, G/F); Tyler Walker (6-4, sr, P); Jake Bratton (6-1, sr, F); Dylln Rider (5-9, jr, G); Hayden Barker (6-1, so, G).

n OUTLOOK: Douglas has that scary word: potential. The team is quick, athletic, aggressive, hard-working and experienced. But it still remains to be seen if the Bearcats can overcome a lack of size and capitalize on the potential they have to make a deep run at state.

Glenrock Herders

n COACH: Justin Kidneigh (third season, 20-26)

n LAST SEASON: 9-13, eighth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1997

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1978

n KEY RETURNERS: Ryan Lee (6-0, sr); Dustin Ailport (5-7, sr); Dalton Downs (5-10, sr); Dustin Worthington (6-2, jr); Kyle Farley (5-11, jr); Murphy Johnston (6-0, jr); Colter Macormic (6-0, jr).

n OUTLOOK: The Herders have a tough, competitive team this winter, one that has plenty of experience. Team chemistry and depth can still improve, but the seniors on the squad will play a key role in making sure those issues come along as expected.

Lander Tigers

n COACH: Tony Selph (second season, 165-68 overall)

n LAST SEASON: 19-11, fifth in East Conference, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: Alex Watkins (6-6, sr); Jake Hogan (5-11, sr); Jacob Meyer (6-0, sr).

n OUTLOOK: The bulk of the Tigers' championship team is gone, but that doesn't mean Lander is out of the running for a repeat. If the Tigers improve as expected throughout the season and gain that necessary varsity experience, they should be able to hold their own in March.

Newcastle Dogies

n COACH: Allen Von Eye (third season, 30-27)

n LAST SEASON: 18-11, third in East Conference, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1990

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, 10 letterwinners. Jeremy Beehler (5-7, so, G); Kade Ferguson (6-6, sr, C/F); Nick Pisciotti (6-3, jr, G/F); Luke Anderson (6-0, sr, G); Cody Culpepper (6-3, sr, F/C); Tyler Bayne (5-9, sr, G); Jeremiah Bayne (6-1, sr, G/F); Joe Shucraft (6-0, sr, F/C); Casey Wright (5-10, jr, G); Asa Hutchinson (5-9, jr, G).

n OUTLOOK: One of the most athletic teams in the state resides in Newcastle. The Dogies are strong and energetic and worked hard in the offseason to improve even more. Depth is still a bit of a question mark, and other players outside of the returning starters need to give Newcastle a balanced scoring punch.

Rawlins Outlaws

n COACH: Denver Allard (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 7-16, sixth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2002

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1997

n KEY RETURNERS: Erik Collier (6-4, sr); Matt Monroe (6-2, jr); Logan Taylor (6-0, jr); Trey Jebens (6-2, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Balance defines this year's Outlaw squad - Rawlins will be able to play nine or 10 players every game with little drop-off. Rawlins has good quickness and speed but is relatively untested at the varsity level.

Torrington Trailblazers

n COACH: Darin Anderson

n LAST SEASON: 10-14, fourth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1987

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Trailblazers' four-year run of state tournament berths ended last year, so returning to state could be a big motivator.

Wheatland Bulldogs

n COACH: Mick Cochran (44-34, 59-43 overall)

n LAST SEASON: 19-9, second in East Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1930

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters, seven letterwinners. Kyle Lenz (6-0, sr); Travis Geile (6-0, sr); Dan Pinneo (6-0, jr); Kyle Lauck (5-10, sr); Paul Nix (6-2, sr); Shea Goddard (6-0, sr); Oliver Ashenhurst (5-10, sr).

n OUTLOOK: The mix the Bulldogs have this fall is interesting - solid experience, good team chemistry and comfort in the system. But for Wheatland to stay close to 3A's top teams, depth will have to improve as younger players begin to fill roles on the varsity.

West Conference

Cody Broncs

n COACH: Jay McCarten

n LAST SEASON: 10-14, fifth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1957

n KEY RETURNERS: Caleb Rivera (5-10, sr); Connor Norton (6-1, sr).

n OUTLOOK: Already this year, the Broncs have had to go through more than most teams do in a season. Injuries, inexperience and a new offense will keep Cody limited, at least at first, but the team has the ability to grow and will likely be hitting its stride - and causing tons of problems for opponents - by conference play.

Jackson Broncs

n COACH: Pete Hoffman (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 10-19, seventh in West Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1984

n KEY RETURNERS: Six letterwinners. Grant Rogers (6-6, jr, F/C); Damon Smith (6-1, jr, G); Rob Caeasar (6-2, jr, F); Kyle Vinson (5-10, jr, G); Jack Maguire (6-1, jr, F); Michael Leahey (6-5, so, F/C).

n OUTLOOK: Jackson doesn't bring a ton of experience to the floor - only one player on the Broncs' roster is a senior. Therefore, the Broncs will rely on a tough group of juniors and sophomores and focus on getting them to work together at the right time.

Kemmerer Rangers

n COACH: Dustin Lym (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 15-12, fourth in West Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1977

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, nine letterwinners. Kevin Hinton (6-0, sr); David Paulson (6-0, sr); Parkie Lint (6-3, sr); Keeton Tucker (6-8, sr); Shane Black (5-10, sr); Kylie Bluemel (5-9, sr); Dallon Henkel (6-2, sr); Jon Archibald (6-3, sr); Eric Robinson (6-3, jr).

n OUTLOOK: All the pieces are in place for Kemmerer - the Rangers have four returning starters, all seniors, and an experienced group of role players around them. The only question mark is how fast they'll adapt to a new system. When the gears start clicking, the Rangers could be a dangerous team.

Lovell Bulldogs

n COACH: Joe Koritnik (fifth season, 75-28)

n LAST SEASON: 19-5, first in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2003

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters. Scotty Jameson (5-10, sr); Grant Geiser (5-8, sr); Hyrum Checketts (6-5, sr); Wes Mangus (6-0, sr); Wes Schmidt (6-2, sr); Kade Baxendale (5-10, jr); Jeff Lewis (6-4, so); Josh Scheffler (5-10, so).

n OUTLOOK: Lovell isn't quite as deep as it was a year ago, as most of the returners don't have much varsity playing experience. Even so, the guard play is strong, and as long as the upperclassmen stay consistent, the younger players should follow.

Lyman Eagles

n COACH: Don Toomer

n LAST SEASON: 9-17, eighth in West Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2007

n KEY RETURNERS: Colton Wakley (sr, F); Eric Gillies (sr, G); Curtis Mitchell (sr, G); Justin Jaggi (sr, G); Garrett Condos (sr, F).

n OUTLOOK: The Eagles are starting from the right spot: They're hard-working, work well together and learn on the fly. The team is mostly untested at the varsity level, though, and has to overcome some inexperience to stay competitive.

Pinedale Wranglers

n COACH: Mike Davis

n LAST SEASON: 18-9, T-second in West Conference, consolation champions at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Seven letterwinners. Wilson Rogers (6-8, sr); Keaton Cross (5-10, jr); Zack Barta (5-11, sr); Cody Booth (5-9, sr); Zach Egle (5-11, sr); Chase Lederer (6-2, sr).

n OUTLOOK: Pinedale has good quickness on the perimeter and better-than-average size in the post, and with a good group of letterwinners back this year, the Wranglers could be in the mix right from the start. However, the team hasn't played together much as a unit on the varsity level and needs to gel during nonconference play for Pinedale to capitalize on its potential.

Powell Panthers

n COACH: Troy Hildebrand

n LAST SEASON: 15-9, T-second in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2002

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1998

n KEY RETURNERS: Eight letterwinners. Jordan Brown (6-1, sr, G); Ryan Brandt (6-4, sr, P); Matt Kifer (5-8, sr, G); Matt McArthur (6-2, sr, P); Galen Mills (6-3, sr, W); Gavin Mills (6-3, sr, W/P); Dallas Robirds (5-10, sr, G); Brandon Sullivan (5-10, sr, G).

n OUTLOOK: The Panthers have a deep, experienced team full of senior leaders. With a good mix of height and athleticism, Powell has the chance to turn heads this winter. Defense will be the Panthers' key; if that comes along, Powell should be a challenge for every opponent.

Worland Warriors

n COACH: Kermit Sweeny (second season, 30th overall, 281-283)

n LAST SEASON: 8-15, sixth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1921

n KEY RETURNERS: Five starters, nine letterwinners. Chantz Ramos, Robert Heyer.

n OUTLOOK: With the talent and experience the Warriors have returning, the team should be able to turn the corner and be one of the more competitive teams in the West. The team has good size and quickness and worked hard in the offseason to improve on last year's showing.

Class 2A

Northeast Conference

Big Horn Rams

n COACH: Ryan Alley (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 5-22, fifth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1986

n KEY RETURNERS: Tim Mendoza (6-1, sr, P); Demete Gostas (5-11, sr, F); Ben Buckingham (6-0, sr, G/F); Matt Metzger (5-11, sr, G); Ian Scofield (6-0, sr, F/P); Anthony Santisteban (5-7, sr, G).

n OUTLOOK: A strong class of seniors leads the Rams this fall, and their play will ultimately determine Big Horn's season. The Rams don't really have much height and lack a true post player, so the perimeter play will have to step it up and the defense will have to stay strong for Big Horn to improve.

Moorcroft Wolves

n COACH: Donavan Voigt (third season, 20-28, 65-52 overall)

n LAST SEASON: 8-15, fourth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1992

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, nine letterwinners. Michael Peterson (6-2, sr, G/F); Dalton Hall (6-4, sr, F); DeeJay Hacklin (6-2, jr, G); Miles Blakeman (5-11, jr, G); Brady Buer (6-4, sr, F); Bryse Lang (6-3, jr, F); Austin Smith (6-0, jr, G); Shane Hadley (6-0, jr, F); Cole Robinson (5-9, so, G).

n OUTLOOK: The key for the Wolves this year is experience - they've got a lot of it. In addition to all the returning players Moorcroft has, 6-6 senior James McInerney is back from injury, and team speed, depth and scoring ability are all in the Wolves' favor this winter.

Sundance Bulldogs

n COACH: Jim O'Connor (17th season, 202-147)

n LAST SEASON: 20-5, first in Northeast Conference, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Five letterwinners. Hayden Johnston (5-11, sr, G); Curt Niehaus (5-10, sr, G); Scottlin Lenz (5-7, sr, G); Jon Shamion (6-1, jr, P); Reed Moore (6-0, so, P).

n OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs are a much less experienced and much shallower team than the one that made it to the title game a year ago. However, the team has tradition and strong guard play, and the Bulldogs will rely on that to keep them competitive.

Tongue River Eagles

n COACH: Larry Moser (18th season, 252-135)

n LAST SEASON: 19-10, T-second in Northeast Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1994

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, seven letterwinners. Michael Tucker (6-0, sr); John Hannahs (5-10, sr); Irwin Falls Down (6-1, jr); Ryan Dunn (6-0, sr); Lucas Carr (5-10, sr); Patrick Wicks (5-10, jr); Brock Hovey (5-11, jr).

n OUTLOOK: All in all, Tongue River has a solid core of returning players, and a strong perimeter game that should be improved from last year. Lack of size is a major worry, though, as no players are taller than Falls Down at 6-1.

Wright Panthers

n COACH: Pat Neely (12th season, 22nd overall)

n LAST SEASON: 10-16, T-second in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2005

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters. Duncan Jones (6-1, sr); Ryan Haefele (6-1, so); Jake Speidel (6-1, sr); Andrew Printz (6-1, sr); Ben Villegas (5-11, sr); Kyle Moss (5-10, sr); Drew Hostetter (6-4, jr); Jeff Bauman (5-11, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Wright returns the bulk of its team from last year and has the type of senior leadership to surprise some teams in 2A. The Panthers have decent size and good athleticism and will be right in the mix for a spot at state again this year.

Northwest Conference

Greybull Buffaloes

n COACH: James Prather (10th season, 119-108)

n LAST SEASON: 10-17, second in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2006

n KEY RETURNERS: One starter, six letterwinners. Sean Sylvester (5-10, jr, G); Trevor Jensen (6-0, sr, F); Mick Gonzalez (5-11, sr, G); Dusty Mills (5-11, sr, F); Braden Miller (6-2, jr, F); Jordan Jolley (6-1, jr, G).

n OUTLOOK: The Buffs will be a young bunch this year. Three seniors and three juniors will likely get the bulk of court time, but a developing freshman class will probably play a key role for the team as the season progresses - as long as they keep tempo and turnovers in their favor.

Riverside Rebels

n COACH: Brent Winters (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 9-18, third in Northwest Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2000

n KEY RETURNERS: Cole Mosegard (5-8, sr); Brandon Brown (5-8, sr); Andrew Vollan (5-10, sr); Zach Christopherson (5-5, so).

n OUTLOOK: An extremely young Rebels team will take the floor this fall, as there are only three seniors, one junior and two sophomores. Seven freshmen will help fill out the squad, which means everyone with a jersey will have to find a way to contribute for the team to make it back to state.

Rocky Mountain Grizzlies

n COACH: Michael Simmons

n LAST SEASON: 7-18, fourth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1998

n KEY RETURNERS: Luis Jurado (5-9, sr); Korey Hocker (6-3, sr); Adam Alvarado (5-7, sr); Lane Friedly (6-2, sr); Sam Sietz (5-11, sr); Carlos Hernandez (5-7, sr).

n OUTLOOK: With decent size - seven players are taller than 6-0, but none are taller than 6-3 - and a group of six senior leaders, the Grizzlies have a solid chance to stay competitive in the Northwest. If the seniors set the right tone, Rocky should be an improved team.

Shoshoni Wranglers

n COACH: Brad Nimmo

n LAST SEASON: 8-14, fifth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1997

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1988

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Wranglers haven't been to state since 1997, but gaining some confidence early in the season could help end that streak.

Thermopolis Bobcats

n COACH: Greg Herold (fourth season, 26-43)

n LAST SEASON: 15-14, first in Northwest Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2004

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, nine letterwinners. Anthony Apland (6-3, sr, P); Colin Herold (6-2, jr, G); Chris Leyba (5-10, jr, G); Chris Hart (5-9, sr, G); Cody Hoffman (5-10, sr, G); Jackson Hayes (6-0, jr, P); Carson Dickinson (6-2, sr, P); Mark Hanson (6-1, jr, P); Skylar Mehalek (5-10, jr, G).

n OUTLOOK: Thermopolis returns its leading scorer (Herold) and rebounder (Apland) from a year ago, but that's not what has other coaches worried. Instead, it's the Bobcats' overall depth with nine letterwinners back that has Thermopolis primed for another deep postseason run.

Southeast Conference

Burns Broncs

n COACH: Glen Kirkbride

n LAST SEASON: 10-11, second in Southeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2003

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1972

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Coming off a state football title, anything is possible for the Broncs, who haven't been to state since 2003.

Guernsey Vikings

n COACH: Todd Nelson

n LAST SEASON: 16-11, T-third in Southeast Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: With a new coach and a new system, the Vikings are the big question mark in the SEWAC this year.

Lingle Doggers

n COACH: Chris Cook (third season, 16-33, fifth overall)

n LAST SEASON: 11-14, fifth in Southeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1990

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters. Skyler Lashley (5-11, sr, G); Alan Hill (6-0, sr, G); Jacob Mirich (6-2, sr, F); Jordan Mirich (6-0, so, G); Zack Ellis (6-3, jr, F); Dakota Forkner (5-9, jr, G); Riley Hansen (5-11, sr, F).

n OUTLOOK: Once again, Lingle should be improved this winter. The Doggers have a tight core of solid players, including three returning senior starters, so expectations are high. With a little confidence and some tough defensive play night in and night out, the Doggers could pull off some surprises.

Lusk Tigers

n COACH: Rich Murray (19th season, 32nd overall)

n LAST SEASON: 25-3, first in Southeast Conference, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: One starter, six letterwinners. Cody Gault (6-2, sr, W); Matt Dooper (6-3, sr, P); Chad Trautman (5-10, sr, W); Jonathan Pischel (5-6, sr, G); Hayden Hester (5-11, sr, P).

n OUTLOOK: Lusk won't be as quick or as tall as the team that won state last year, but several key players from last year's run are back. The Tigers have enough going for them on both offense and defense, as well as a solid tradition, to remain in the championship chase this year.

Pine Bluffs Hornets

n COACH: Pat Walter

n LAST SEASON: 6-16, T-third in Southeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1998

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1983

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, seven letterwinners. Travis Werner (6-0, sr, G); Braxton Clark (5-10, sr, F); James Thompson (6-4, sr, C); Tanner Eastman (5-7, jr, G); Chris Gorman (6-1, jr, F); Blayne Gilbert (6-4, so, C); Austin Lang (5-7, so, G).

n OUTLOOK: This year, the Hornets strike a good balance between perimeter and post and have well-defined player roles - two key elements that should pay off in the long run. Pine Bluffs still has some work to do defensively and needs to learn to win the tight games, but the team's improvement has been evident in the preseason.

Southwest Conference

Big Piney Punchers

n COACH: Nate Strong

n LAST SEASON: 7-17, T-third in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2001

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Punchers may be locked into one of the strongest conferences in 2A this year, so their schedule should help make them better.

Mountain View Buffalos

n COACH: Kevin Lueck

n LAST SEASON: 5-18, T-third in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1977

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters. Jake Bullinger (sr); Chris Maldonado (sr); Russell Baker (sr); Payton Brown (sr); Zach Brown (sr); Brendon Dickerson (sr); Bryant Brown (sr).

n OUTLOOK: After a one-year bump, the Buffalos are back in contention and could be one of 2A's most improved teams by season's end. With seven seniors fronting the squad, the team has shown the ability to improve and should be able to stick with most teams on its schedule.

Wind River Cougars

n COACH: Dick Quayle

n LAST SEASON: 29-1, first in Southwest Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters. Pete Babione (5-8, sr, G); Dustin Panzetanga (5-8, sr, F); Trey Simmons (6-3, sr, P); Joseph Big Knife (5-8, sr, F); Brian Roanhorse (5-6, sr, G); Trent Jordan (5-11, jr, F).

n OUTLOOK: Young, but athletic, defines the Cougars this year. Wind River is hard-working and athletic and knows how to win, but replacing a strong senior class - and getting younger players worked into the system - will take some time.

Wyoming Indian Chiefs

n COACH: Craig Ferris

n LAST SEASON: 21-9, second in Southwest Conference, consolation champs at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2001

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Other 2A coaches are weary of the Chiefs, who return most of their players from last year's consolation champs.

Class 1A

Northeast Conference

Arvada-Clearmont Panthers

n COACH: Hilary Michelena (second season)

n LAST SEASON: 0-19, sixth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2002

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters. Ryan Baumgartner; Shelby Baumgartner; Steven Belus; David Welty.

n OUTLOOK: The Panthers have the experience and the size necessary to shake off last season's rough go and earn back some respect. The team's work ethic is also in the right place, but chemistry remains a question mark - one that could be solved by conference play.

Hulett Red Devils

n COACH: Friel Lynn

n LAST SEASON: 5-14, fifth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: New coach Lynn has been with the Red Devils before, so assimilating to his system might take less time for the Red Devils than with another coach.

Kaycee Buckaroos

n COACH: Jason Humble (17th season, 245-139)

n LAST SEASON: 23-5, first in Northeast Conference, consolation champions at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1999

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters/letterwinners. Jayson Foley (6-1, sr, C); Mike Garcia (5-9, sr, G); Bodie Mathisen (6-0, sr, F).

n OUTLOOK: With three returning senior starters, Kaycee has the right base from which to build. Past those three, though, the Buckaroos need to develop depth, avoid injuries and overcome their definite lack of size (Foley is the tallest player at 6-1) to stay in the hunt for state.

Midwest Oilers

n COACH: Ken Stoick

n LAST SEASON: 14-12, second in Northeast Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Oilers have back-to-back state tournament berths under their belts now, and with a solid group of returning players, this could be Midwest's breakout year.

Normative Services Wolves

n COACH: Gene Ligocki

n LAST SEASON: 10-12, T-third in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: N/A

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Wolves are always a question mark because of their shifting student body, but last year's improvement is reason for them to be hopeful.

Upton Bobcats

n COACH: Kim Booth (third season, 21st overall)

n LAST SEASON: 11-15, T-third in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, six letterwinners. Hyrum Booth (sr); Matt Lougee (sr); Mark Himle; Derek Lougee; Dalton Latham; Nate Sutherland.

n OUTLOOK: Upton has the core of its 2008 team returning for 2009, so there's reason for excitement. The Bobcats also have the benefit of some fresh blood to give the team added depth, so hanging with the conference's top teams is definitely possible if that depth grows as hoped.

Northwest Conference

Arapaho Charter Warriors

n COACH: Alfred Redman

n LAST SEASON: 7-16, T-fifth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: N/A

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Brandon Gould (6-4, so, C); Alvin Seminole (5-10, jr, F).

n OUTLOOK: Arapaho has a new look this year - two returners, but no seniors - so it will be on the junior class to step up and play their roles. Four of the team's 10 players are juniors, so if they set the pace for the rest of the team, the Warriors could be an improved ballclub.

Burlington Huskies

n COACH: Dan LaRose (fifth season, 87-16)

n LAST SEASON: 23-3, first in Northwest Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2006

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, nine letterwinners. Eric McNiven (6-3, jr, F); Todd Davidson (6-4, sr, C); Samuel Davidson (6-4, jr, F); Wesley Neves (5-7, sr, G); Spencer Flores (5-10, sr, G); Mycheal Wiles (6-0, sr, G); Justin Preator (5-8, sr, G); Shawn Christiansen (5-11, jr, G); Tim Davidson (6-3, so, F).

n OUTLOOK: The depth the Huskies have makes them an automatic contender for another run at state. Burlington has strong guard and post play, a difficult preseason schedule and a good mix of young and old. Now, it just all has to come together at the right time.

Dubois Rams

n COACH: Jim Dolezol

n LAST SEASON: 1-19, T-fifth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1994

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Rams have a new coach this winter, and with nowhere to go but up, anything can happen.

Meeteetse Longhorns

n COACH: Rick Paxton

n LAST SEASON: 14-10, fourth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1990

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1987

n KEY RETURNERS: Kris Ward (6-2, sr); Evan Haywood (5-11, sr); Blaise Allen (5-9, sr); Quinn Stossel (5-9, sr); Tanner Thomas (6-1, sr); Zach Ruppert (6-0, sr); Travis Guthrie (6-1, so).

n OUTLOOK: This may be Meeteetse's best chance to make some noise. The Longhorns have an experienced group of seniors that play well together and provide necessary leadership, but a lack of depth surrounding them is reason for concern.

St. Stephens Eagles

n COACH: Jeremy Francom

n LAST SEASON: 7-20, third in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2007

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Eagles are on their third coach in three years, but their past success is undeniable and will be enough to keep the Eagles' foes ready.

Ten Sleep Pioneers

n COACH: Dustin Stephenson (first season, ninth overall)

n LAST SEASON: 18-5, second in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1982

n KEY RETURNERS: John Erdahl (6-5, sr); Coulter Mills (6-3, sr); Hunter Burningham (6-3, sr).

n OUTLOOK: With most of their players back, the Pioneers have high hopes for this season. Adjusting to a new coach might take time, but Ten Sleep's goals are simple: have fun, work as a team and make it to state. The Pioneers have the ability to do all three.

Southeast Conference

Chugwater Buffaloes

n COACH: Kit West

n LAST SEASON: 4-16, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2002

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Chugwater has a tough challenge ahead in the East Regional, but it can rise to meet it if it gains depth and experience during the regular season.

Glendo Eagles

n COACH: Jim Blatnick (fourth season)

n LAST SEASON: 8-12, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1979

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters. Andy Duff (5-11, jr, G); Garret Wilson (5-8, jr, G).

n OUTLOOK: There isn't much depth for the Eagles this winter, as only nine players - and no seniors - will suit up. But the Eagles have good chemistry and unity and with Duff, the team's leading scorer a year ago, coming back, Glendo should at least be competitive throughout the season.

Rock River Longhorns

n COACH: Les Dunmire (16th season)

n LAST SEASON: 6-17, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1971

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters. James Strauch (5-11, sr); Kyle Cope (6-3, sr); Will Clark (5-10, jr); Doug Nottage (5-10, so); Tyler Barber (6-4, so); Lee Laird (5-9, sr).

n OUTLOOK: With their leading scorer (Clark) and rebounder (Strauch) back from last season, the Longhorns have the type of players needed to keep them competitive. The Longhorns should be able to run with most teams and have solid size to match up down low.

Saratoga Panthers

n COACH: Rex Hohnholt

n LAST SEASON: 18-4, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Five letterwinners. Jonathan Jones (5-10, sr); Hayden Hohnholt (5-11, sr); Ben Collamer (5-9, jr); Paul Young (6-4, jr); Nate Kennaday (6-3, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Saratoga's learning curve is a bit steeper than most years, as the majority of the team doesn't have much varsity experience. But the Panthers have shown the will needed to push themselves and improve, and they have just enough returning experience to remain a factor in the 1A title race.

Southeast Cyclones

n COACH: Tim Williams (ninth season, 121-68)

n LAST SEASON: 13-14, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1981

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters. Blake Herbst (5-10, jr, W); Brodie Epler (6-0, sr, W); Dane Hansen (6-2, jr, P); Luke Kaufman (6-1, jr, W); Robbie Gurney (6-0, sr, P); Jake Foos (6-4, jr, P); Colby Sturgeon (5-10, jr, G); Trevor Ross (6-3, sr, P).

n OUTLOOK: Deep, big and experienced describes the Cyclones this winter. Southeast has four starters back from a team that finished second at state, and has nearly a dozen that can contribute. Turnovers and defensive consistency are still question marks, but if those areas improve Southeast should be right in the middle of the fun in March.

Southwest Conference

Cokeville Panthers

n COACH: Wade Fiscus

n LAST SEASON: 4-16, T-fourth in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1997

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The traditionally tough Panthers couldn't make it past the pigtail game last year at regionals, which may be a key motivator for this winter.

Encampment Tigers

n COACH: Clint Bromley (fourth season, 94-15 overall)

n LAST SEASON: 25-3, first in Southwest Conference, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: Max Doebele (6-3, sr, F); Chad McKinney (6-4, sr, C); Danial Barkhurst (6-0, sr, F); Anthony Rakness (6-10, sr, G/F).

n OUTLOOK: Encampment's strong points - varsity experience and good senior leadership - are also somewhat revealing of its weaknesses. Four seniors will lead the team, but there are only 12 total players on the roster, so gaining experience early and leaning on the leadership of the seniors will be important.

Farson Pronghorns

n COACH: Rick Mitchelson

n LAST SEASON: 5-16, T-fourth in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1998

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Farson slipped down a peg last year but is anticipated to have a good group of returning players back this winter.

Hanna Miners

n COACH: Clif Jones (fourth season)

n LAST SEASON: 13-13, T-second in Southwest Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1951

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, eight letterwinners. Charlie George (5-10, so); Mitch Long (5-9, so); Matt Mayfield (6-2, jr); Morgan DeWitt (6-0, jr); Ryan Puckett (5-9, so); Brandon Storer (6-1, sr); Trevor Strauch (6-1, jr); Emmett Vallot (6-0, sr).

n OUTLOOK: Even though the team only has two seniors, Hanna has a load of experienced players back - including three starters. But the team doesn't have much size (no one taller than 6-2) and will have to improve its scoring and rebounding consistency to make it back to state.

Snake River Rattlers

n COACH: Paul Prestrud

n LAST SEASON: 15-11, T-second in Southwest Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2000

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Several 1A coaches are calling on Snake River to be one of the classification's toughest teams, thanks to its strong senior class.
