Class 4A

East Conference

Cheyenne Central Indians

n COACH: Chad Whitworth (97-35, 121-41 overall)

n LAST SEASON: 24-5, T-second in East Conference, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: One starter, six letterwinners. Lindsey Fearing (5-6, sr); Shelby Cegelski (5-5, sr); Nickelle Rusk (5-7, sr); Katelyn Means (6-0, jr); Makena Cameron (so); Roxanne Box (5-5, jr).

n OUTLOOK: A quick set of athletic guards will lead the Indians this winter, but they can't do it alone. Central has players ready to step up in the post, but they're relatively unproven. If the Indians' posts continue to improve, the team should be able to compete with almost anyone.

Cheyenne East Thunderbirds

n COACH: Jon Will (third season)

n LAST SEASON: 12-17, fourth in East Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1988

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, 11 letterwinners. Kelli Cordell (5-6, jr); Jaqueline Case (5-5, sr); Jessica Jester (6-1, jr); Senaca Lucero (5-7, jr); Jasmine Belin (5-9, sr); Erica Hedlund (5-6, jr); Amy Brown (5-5, sr); Breanna Johnson (5-7, jr); Meghan Sipe (6-0, so); Victoria Christensen (5-9, sr); Jazmyn Webster (5-9, jr).

n OUTLOOK: East has a good group of experienced players that finished strong to end last season. Because of that, depth isn't a worry. The group is also athletic, but limiting turnovers and capitalizing on opportunities will be key for the Thunderbirds this winter.

Gillette Camels

n COACH: Mitch Holst (ninth season)

n LAST SEASON: 21-7, first in East Conference, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2006

n KEY RETURNERS: Five starters, 10 letterwinners. Emily Moore (5-9, sr); Jessie Fortner (5-10, sr); Jordan Kent (6-0, sr); Jayde Schelling (5-10, sr); Jordan Kelley (5-9, so); Krista Schwindt (5-4, sr); Brooke Jorgenson (5-9, sr); Devin Diedrich (5-5, jr); Mo Bunney (5-7, jr); Ann Spragg (5-10, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Experience is the key for the Camels this winter. They are loaded with it. Gillette returns 10 total players from last year's runner-up squad, and that experience will keep the Camels in the hunt all year. A tough schedule will test Gillette, though.

Laramie Lady Plainsmen

n COACH: Rod Tyson

n LAST SEASON: 10-15, sixth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Laramie was last in the East last year and with a new coach, the Lady Plainsmen are the conference's biggest unknown.

Riverton Wolverines

n COACH: Reggie Miller

n LAST SEASON: 11-13, fifth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2003

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1984

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Other 4A coaches are wary of Riverton, mostly because the Wolverines should return several key players from last year.

Sheridan Broncs

n COACH: Derek Bissitt (first season, 13th overall, 196-99)

n LAST SEASON: 20-6, T-second in East Conference, consolation champions at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2007

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters, six letterwinners. Katie Strandholm (5-9, sr); Taylor Gardner (5-7, sr); Kayla Woodward (5-10, so); Hilary Pilch (5-5, jr); Emily Reichardt (5-6, so); Kylee Kinzer (5-7, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Even with a new coach, the Broncs will play a similar style of basketball - fast-paced, up-tempo, full-court mayhem. Without much height, though, the Broncs will need to rely on fundamentals in the paint, and finding a way to snare rebounds using those fundamentals will be key.

West Conference

Evanston Red Devils

n COACH: Dave Deru

n LAST SEASON: 17-11, third in West Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Evanston has made it to state three years in a row and even though it graduated several key players, enough return for the Red Devils to make it back again.

Green River Wolves

n COACH: Darol Nutt

n LAST SEASON: 7-20, fourth in West Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Green River only had two seniors on its 2008 state tournament roster, so the Wolves could be a tough team to beat.

Kelly Walsh Trojans

n COACH: Pat Scissons

n LAST SEASON: 5-16, fifth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, seven letterwinners. Emily Rochelle (6-0, sr); Lauren Hoppe (5-7, sr); Bailey Kremke (5-7, sr); Kayla Fakelman (5-11, jr); Nicolle Dvorak (5-8, sr); Alexi Layton (5-6, sr); Kelsey Schiller (5-11, sr).

n OUTLOOK: The right mix is there for the Trojans to have a breakout season. KW has a good core of returning players, including seven senior leaders, and if the team develops a more balanced offense and stays consistent on defense, the Trojans could be one of the most improved teams in the state.

Natrona County Fillies

n COACH: Doug Diehl (second season)

n LAST SEASON: 17-10, T-first in West Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2000

n KEY RETURNERS: Eleven letterwinners. Ashley Akers (5-10, sr, P/F); Makenzie Bartsch (6-1, sr, P); Ashley Creager (5-5, jr, G); Taylor Diehl (5-9, sr, G); Baillie Gibson (5-9, jr, P/F); Stephanie Lee (6-0, so, P); Ashley Tuschling (5-5, sr, G); Chelsea Combe (5-5, jr, G); Fallon Miller (5-7, jr, G/F); Elizabeth Pieper (5-10, jr, P).

n OUTLOOK: It's basically the same team you saw last year that will be wearing the jerseys for the Fillies this year. Loaded with size, athleticism and experience, the Fillies are one of the early favorites in 4A. Protecting the ball and avoiding injuries will be the keys to meeting the team's expectations.

Rock Springs Tigers

n COACH: Darcy Bath

n LAST SEASON: 16-12, T-first in West Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1992

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Other 4A coaches are high on Rock Springs, which only lost two seniors from last year's tournament team.

Star Valley Braves

n COACH: Jason Cazier

n LAST SEASON: 4-18, sixth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2000

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Star Valley is still looking to build up to 4A play and is trying to find that breakout year.

Class 3A

East Conference

Buffalo Bison

n COACH: Michelle Dahlberg

n LAST SEASON: 8-16, fifth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1976

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, nine letterwinners. Catie Lohse (5-5, sr, G); Jordan Patterson (5-6, sr, G); Kelsey Armstrong (5-7, jr, W); Austin Daley (5-7, jr, G); Callie Knifong (5-4, sr, G); Laura Vaselin (5-6, sr, P); Heather Collen (5-7, sr, P); Chelsey Horn (5-5, sr, W); Megan Belus (5-6, jr, G).

n OUTLOOK: The Bison have the depth to compete with every team on their schedule, thanks to the fact that they have enough bodies to run in and out of the game and to full-court press for most of it. But no one with significant varsity experience is taller than 5-8, which could be a concern on the glass and inside defensively.

Douglas Bearcats

n COACH: Jacilyn Heny

n LAST SEASON: 19-8, second in East Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2005

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Even though Douglas lost key seniors from last year's team, other 3A coaches think Douglas will remain a tough team to beat because of its depth.

Glenrock Herders

n COACH: Tony Lehner

n LAST SEASON: 17-10, third in East Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Five starters, nine letterwinners. Nikki Tresch (sr); Hannah Dahlke (sr); Brooke Hughes (sr); Kaylee Gray (sr); Shelby Stewart (so); Shaynna Hoyt (jr); Christine Dona (jr); Lexie Blackburn (jr); Jordann Stewart (jr).

n OUTLOOK: Experience and depth are definite strengths for the Herders, who return almost everyone from last year's state tournament team. However, consistency both on the glass and on defense has been a question, but if the Herders can patch those gaps and continue developing their team chemistry, they could be hard to beat.

Lander Tigers

n COACH: Spike Robinson

n LAST SEASON: 11-16, sixth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2006

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Despite missing out on state last year, Lander traditionally puts a tough team on the court and will probably do so again this winter.

Newcastle Dogies

n COACH: Sonja Karp

n LAST SEASON: 20-8, fourth in East Conference, consolation champions at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1979

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Newcastle had several players gain key time on the varsity last year, which has made the rest of 3A wary of the Dogies.

Rawlins Outlaws

n COACH: Ken Stucki (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 0-23, eighth in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2003

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Mairiana Griffith (6-1, jr, P); Jammie Garcia (5-5, sr, G); Adrianne Griebel (5-4, sr, G).

n OUTLOOK: Rawlins' success this winter will be predicated on its development. The team has only two seniors and is young and inexperienced, but if younger team members can step in and fill roles in a new system, the Outlaws have the chance to at least be competitive.

Torrington Trailblazers

n COACH: Jeff Halley (third season, 38-16, 11th overall, 146-105)

n LAST SEASON: 24-4, first in East Conference, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1990

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters, five letterwinners. Diana Long (5-9, sr); Taylor Moore (5-10, sr); Lexie Madden (5-11, sr); Libby Childs (5-7, sr); Jessie Dunbar (5-7, sr).

n OUTLOOK: The Trailblazers have the ability to play any game - enough speed to run, enough size to slow down. Torrington also has some good returning experience, but depth is still a question with seven seniors gone from last year's squad.

Wheatland Bulldogs

n COACH: Trista Teten

n LAST SEASON: 8-17, seventh in East Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2001

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters. Darbi Yost (jr); Kendra Koger (jr); Amanda Ruwart (sr).

n OUTLOOK: On the surface, the Bulldogs look to be rebuilding. Wheatland lost six seniors from last year's squad and don't return a dearth of experience otherwise. Yost and Koger will set the tone for the team and if the rest of the team can follow, the Bulldogs could pull a few upsets.

West Conference

Cody Fillies

n COACH: Kim Niemann (second season)

n LAST SEASON: 9-16, fifth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2004

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters. Mia Codiga (5-7, sr); Britney Meyers (5-10, jr); Rachel Petersen (5-10, sr).

n OUTLOOK: The Fillies will rely a lot on youth this winter, because with only two seniors there's not another option. Even so, the team has a good mix of talent and quickness and can rely on its defensive pressure to keep every game close and competitive.

Jackson Broncs

n COACH: Sean Shockley (ninth season, 133-69)

n LAST SEASON: 27-1, first in West Conference, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: Ten letterwinners. Kelsey Bancroft (5-6, sr, G); Kelly Burns (5-11, sr, P); Robye Heron (5-6, sr, G); Sydney Leichliter (6-0, sr, G); Nicole Sutton (5-9, sr, P); Kathleen Eastman (6-0, jr, P); Jessica Fischer (5-8, jr, P); Abie Moulder (5-11, jr, G); Ellie Rice (5-5, jr, G); Brooke Rice (5-5, so, G).

n OUTLOOK: After two consecutive state titles, it doesn't look like there will be much of a letdown for Jackson this winter. Of the Broncs' top 15 players from last year, 12 are back, and they're all athletic. First, though, Jackson has to buy into the team-first concept and develop its team chemistry in order to have a chance in March.

Kemmerer Rangers

n COACH: Mitchell Argyle

n LAST SEASON: 4-19, eighth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1993

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: After a successful volleyball season, Kemmerer may roll that confidence right on over into basketball and a new coach.

Lovell Bulldogs

n COACH: Bob Geiser (14th season, 189-117, 15th overall, 198-127)

n LAST SEASON: 21-6, second in West Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2000

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters, six letterwinners. Stephanie Green (5-8, jr, F); Katie Walker (5-7, jr, G); Mykel Anderson (5-9, jr, F); Danielle Reasch (5-7, jr, G/F); Karen Koritnik (5-9, so, G/F); Keesha Savage (5-8, jr, F).

n OUTLOOK: Without any seniors, the Bulldogs will rely on a young group of players to get the job done this year. Even so, the team is energetic, quick and cohesive, and if it develops the depth it needs, the Bulldogs could meet the high expectations they have for themselves.

Lyman Eagles

n COACH: Tom Wells

n LAST SEASON: 5-18, sixth in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1995

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Lyman is on the rest of 3A's radar because the Eagles are anticipated to return several key players.

Pinedale Wranglers

n COACH: Michelle Busch

n LAST SEASON: 5-19, seventh in West Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2000

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1984

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: It's been a rough go for the Wranglers in 3A, but another year with a new system might help them break through.

Powell Panthers

n COACH: Luke Danforth (sixth season)

n LAST SEASON: 19-9, fourth in West Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Ten letterwinners. Kelsey Allen (5-5, sr); McKenzie Danforth (5-9, sr); Darcee Lynn (5-8, r); Kami Cooley (5-6, jr); Savannah Donarski (5-11, jr); Lauren Fagnant (5-6, jr); Katie Kipp (5-8, jr); Hannah Pollart (5-10, jr).

n OUTLOOK: The Panthers have enough returning players to be one of 3A's early favorites, but experience alone won't carry Powell. Fortunately, a solid offseason has improved the team's hard-nosed defensive presence, and as long as Powell's depth improves as anticipated, the Panthers could be tough to beat.

Worland Warriors

n COACH: Mark Mortimer

n LAST SEASON: 19-9, third in West Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: One starter, four letterwinners. Taylor Willard (5-4, sr, G); Sami Richins (5-2, sr, G); Kelsey Wood (6-0, sr, P); Kielee Ellsworth (5-3, jr, G).

n OUTLOOK: The Warriors don't have much choice but to learn on the fly this winter. With only one starter back, some younger players will have to fill their roles in a hurry for Worland to stick with some of 3A's top teams.

Class 2A

Northeast Conference

Big Horn Rams

n COACH: Mike Daley

n LAST SEASON: 22-3, second in Northeast Conference, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Most 2A coaches have pegged the Rams as one of the classification's favorites because of their past success and the players the Rams are anticipated to have back.

Moorcroft Wolves

n COACH: Randi Faeth

n LAST SEASON: 7-16, fifth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Moorcroft always has a tough road to hoe in the normally difficult Northeast, so improvement throughout the season will be important.

Sundance Bulldogs

n COACH: Blake Hunkins

n LAST SEASON: 11-13, T-third in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2002

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs have a new coach this winter, and with a new system the first few games will be important to gain both comfort and confidence.

Tongue River Eagles

n COACH: Dianne Moser

n LAST SEASON: 21-7, first in Northeast Conference, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2007

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Eagles are always tough, year in and year out, and TR should have enough players back from last year to remain in 2A's upper echelon.

Wright Panthers

n COACH: Doug Schrader

n LAST SEASON: 18-12, T-third in Northeast Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Wright had an improved team last year, but must replace four seniors from last year's tourney team.

Northwest Conference

Greybull Buffaloes

n COACH: Marty Wrage

n LAST SEASON: 8-18, fourth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1989

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Greybull could be right back in the mix at regionals if it can gain some confidence early in the season.

Riverside Rebels

n COACH: Cory Sova (16th season, 201-162, 20th overall, 251-197)

n LAST SEASON: 11-16, third in Northwest Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1983 (as Manderson)

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters, eight letterwinners. Jamie Hovey (5-6, sr); Ashley Vigil (5-6, sr); Nicole Vavra (5-5, sr); Wacey Triplett (5-8, sr); Amber Getzfreid (5-6, jr); Chancey Rollins (5-5, jr); Chelsea Longshore (5-5, jr); Tanya Twitchell (5-8, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Few teams have the experience the Rebels have back. That, plus a strong defensive mindset and solid all-around quickness, has Riverside excited for this winter. But no one on the team is taller than 5-8, and the Rebels need to improve their scoring consistency before thinking about trophies.

Rocky Mountain Grizzlies

n COACH: Ryan Boettcher

n LAST SEASON: 3-19, fifth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2002

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1993

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: It's been awhile since the Grizzlies made a run at state, so building both excitement and experience will be key this winter.

Shoshoni Wranglers

n COACH: Marty Weber (second season)

n LAST SEASON: 15-8, second in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2004

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1983

n KEY RETURNERS: Four letterwinners. Cami Zent (sr); Tess Clemetson (jr); Missy Scott (sr); Johnee Jo Campbell (jr); Tessa Bowthorpe (so); Nellie Anderson (so).

n OUTLOOK: Shoshoni has one of the younger teams in 2A, with only two seniors and two juniors. Younger players will have to rise to the varsity level of play quickly for the team to stay competitive. Fortunately, the squad is willing to learn and adjust to the changes.

Thermopolis Bobcats

n COACH: Rob Davis

n LAST SEASON: 17-13, first in Northwest Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2003

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Bobcats could be strong again this winter as they only lost three seniors, but they will need some time to learn a new system with a new coach.

Southeast Conference

Burns Broncs

n COACH: Barry Ward (sixth season, 41-44, 12th overall, 158-65)

n LAST SEASON: 13-12, first in Southeast Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Ten letterwinners. Priscilla St. John (5-8, sr); Kelsey Eklund (5-7, sr); Jordan Hirsig (6-0, jr); Lanie Cathcart (5-6, jr); Alex Ward (5-5, so); Michelle St. John (5-6, so); Becca Miller (5-7, so); Aisha Anderson (5-7, jr); Ashley Spatz (5-4, so); Kaylee Taylor (5-7, so).

n OUTLOOK: The Broncs have one of the deepest teams in the state, and even though there are only two seniors on the roster, experience isn't a problem. There is still room to grow, though, and Burns can go even farther than last year if it does just that.

Guernsey Vikings

n COACH: Glenn Freeburg (eighth season, 32nd overall)

n LAST SEASON: 6-17, fifth in Southeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Five starters, 10 letterwinners. Tyler Moats (5-5, sr); Ashlee Eller (5-4, sr); Danielle Starr (5-4, jr); Tia Orr (5-10, jr); Amanda Wilkes (6-0, so); Jeri Jo Morgan (5-4, sr); Dustin Esquibel (5-5, jr); Cori Christensen (5-10, so); DreAnna Elmore (5-4, so); Lacey Walker (5-5, so).

n OUTLOOK: With basically the same team returning from last year, the Vikings have reason to be optimistic. There's plenty of varsity experience, and the influx of a talented group of freshmen to the mix will make the team better. As always, success is dependent on peaking at the right time.

Lingle Doggers

n COACH: Christina Mills (third season)

n LAST SEASON: 8-14, fourth in Southeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2006

n KEY RETURNERS: Six letterwinners. Brooke Kappen (5-5, sr, G); Carolyn Hageman (5-6, jr, G/F); Alena Gronewald (5-10, jr, F); Emily Patterson (5-1, so, G); Hannah Gibbs (5-1, so, G); Heather Gibbs (5-1, so, G).

n OUTLOOK: It'll be a deeper, more experienced Lingle team that takes the floor this winter. Without a lot of height, the Doggers will try and rely on quickness and defensive pressure to force teams into an up-tempo game, which could be an advantage come league play.

Lusk Tigers

n COACH: Deb Murray (22nd season, 284-112)

n LAST SEASON: 9-15, T-second in Southeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1999

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters. Lacey Pfister (5-6, sr, G); Megan Miller (5-5, sr, G); Adrienne Hammond (5-3, sr, G); Katie Glendy (5-9, sr, P); Dyann Diercks (5-7, sr, P); Ashley Burt (5-7, sr, W); Breanna Bredthauer (5-3, jr, G); Tomi Glendy (5-7, jr, P); Dani Dooper (5-4, so, G).

n OUTLOOK: Lusk has a good group of returning players, but even so, there is a little rebuilding to do. Defense and quickness will define this year's team, and if the Tigers improve elsewhere they could be a tough team to beat.

Pine Bluffs Hornets

n COACH: Matt Thurin

n LAST SEASON: 13-10, T-second in Southeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1994

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: After coming up short of a state berth last year, the Hornets should be plenty motivated this winter to reverse that finish.

Southwest Conference

Big Piney Punchers

n COACH: Mack Rawhouser

n LAST SEASON: 1-23, fourth in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2002

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Big Piney ended last season on a long losing streak, so simply getting a victory under its belt early in the season could be enough to give the squad some confidence.

Mountain View Buffalos

n COACH: Dustin Rees (second season)

n LAST SEASON: 20-6, T-first in Southwest Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1998

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, eight letterwinners. Jaci Egley (5-10, sr); Amber Henry (5-9, sr); Shay Murray (5-10, sr); Halie Gardner (5-11, sr); Ali Lindemood (5-10, jr); Jan Miller (5-8, jr); Emily Smith (6-1, so); Tawny Bugas (5-7, so).

n OUTLOOK: Experience and size are both in the Buffalos' favor this winter, as they've got plenty of both - eight letterwinners and six players over 5-10 assure that. The only concern is a tough non-conference schedule, but the Buffalos are hoping it'll pay off when it counts.

Wind River Cougars

n COACH: Dirk Gosnell

n LAST SEASON: 7-20, third in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Sheresa Kazee (5-7, sr, F); Michelle Steinhoff (5-7, sr, F).

n OUTLOOK: The Cougars have seven players back from last year, the bulk of them coming in a strong junior class. While the year shapes up as a building year for Wind River, the blend of young and old will make the team stronger, and if the team develops a bit more chemistry, the Cougars can cause some trouble for their foes.

Wyoming Indian Lady Chiefs

n COACH: Aleta Moss (19th season)

n LAST SEASON: 23-8, T-first in Southwest Conference, consolation champs at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2004

n KEY RETURNERS: Summer St. Clair (sr); Kristen Washakie (jr); Shelli After Buffalo (sr); Bobbie Redcap (sr); Antonia Valdez (so).

n OUTLOOK: Wyoming Indian has a solid mix of experience and talent, and quickness on the perimeter coupled with a stronger inside game means the Lady Chiefs are among the 2A favorites. Meshing new players with the returnees could be the key to the team's success this winter.

Class 1A

Northeast Conference

Arvada-Clearmont Panthers

n COACH: Bill Joy (fifth season, 90-14)

n LAST SEASON: 23-3, first in Northeast Conference, state runners-up

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2007

n KEY RETURNERS: One starter, six letterwinners. Morgan Mines (6-0, sr); Nycole Scott (5-6, sr); Shem Lovato (5-2, jr); Kaylyn Svalina (5-6, jr); Sirena Wilson (5-3, jr); Hailee Armstrong (5-5, so).

n OUTLOOK: The Panthers have some definite positives going for them this winter - they're big, play well together and have a winning tradition and positive mindset. But the team is still fairly young and lacks significant varsity experience, so depth will need to grow as the season progresses.

Hulett Red Devils

n COACH: Josh Willems

n LAST SEASON: 13-13, T-second in Northeast Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Hulett must find a way to replace three key seniors from last year's tournament team, but with a new coach anything could happen.

Kaycee Lady Bucs

n COACH: Laura Pierson

n LAST SEASON: 14-12, T-second in Northeast Conference, third place at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1993

n KEY RETURNERS: Kelsey Straub (5-3, sr); Taylor Koch (5-8, sr); Alecia Cushman (5-7, sr); Nancy Garcia (5-6, jr).

n OUTLOOK: A roster of 17 gives Kaycee one of its deepest teams ever. However, 13 of those 17 are either freshmen or sophomores, so gaining experience and improving as the season progresses will be paramount to success in the postseason.

Midwest Oilers

n COACH: Stephanie Braunsroth (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 13-9, T-fourth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Four starters. Jordan Miller (5-6, sr, P); Tosha Lindsay (5-4, jr, F); Brittany O'Neill (5-5, jr, F); Katie Robinson (5-4, jr, G); Kyanne Armstrong (5-8, jr, P); Shaelynn Sonsoucie (5-5, jr, P).

n OUTLOOK: The Oilers have a new coach this winter, and if the team adapts to a new style quickly, it could surprise some teams in the Northeast with its quickness and ability to run the floor. Miller is the lone senior, but she's backed up by a strong junior class, a group that'll help the team overcome its lack of height.

Normative Services Wolves

n COACH: Jody Koltiska

n LAST SEASON: 1-16, sixth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: N/A

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: NSI always has a tough task due to its position, but a couple victories in the early going could lead to the kind of confidence necessary for league play.

Upton Bobcats

n COACH: Frank Pautz (25th season)

n LAST SEASON: 8-18, T-fourth in Northeast Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2003

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Kristi Kidd (5-3, sr); Julie Hillman (5-6, sr); Wendy Vrana (5-1, jr); Dani Esquivel (5-3, jr); Brianna Hagerman (5-9, jr); Kristy Dysart (5-6, jr); Trinity Till (5-3, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Upton will be the pesky team of the Northeast - small, but quick, aggressive, strong defensively and good with the shooting touch. Experience is the biggest doubt, as there is only one returning senior letterwinner, but the junior and sophomore classes will be able to augment the lack of seniors.

Northwest Conference

Arapaho Charter Warriors

n COACH: Alfred Redman

n LAST SEASON: 4-15, seventh in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: N/A

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Arapaho Charter is continuing to develop its program in its second full year of varsity play.

Burlington Huskies

n COACH: Jerry Patrick

n LAST SEASON: 24-3, first in Northwest Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2003

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Burlington traditionally has a tough team, but they need to find a way to replace three seniors from last year's squad.

Dubois Rams

n COACH: Patricia Kelley

n LAST SEASON: 7-18, fifth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2001

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Dubois could pull off some surprises in the Northwest if the Rams build off what they learned last season.

Fort Washakie Eagles

n COACH: Alan Wolfe

n LAST SEASON: 10-9, fourth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: N/A

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: One starter. Gladys Hill (5-10, sr); Kacy Rae Makeshine (5-5, jr); Talissa Abeyta (5-8, jr); Genivee Goggles (5-5, jr); Macayla Tillman (5-9, jr); Crystal Washington (5-2, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Fort Washakie was a quick study in its first year of varsity play, finishing with a winning record and one game away from a state berth. This year, there is still room for improvement as the team is small and not very deep, but the desire to continue the improvement the team has shown is pushing the squad this season.

Meeteetse Longhorns

n COACH: Tara Crosby

n LAST SEASON: 4-17, sixth in Northwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2003

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: It's been awhile since the Longhorns have had sustained success, but if they continue to build on their fundamentals, they could surprise a few teams on their schedule.

St. Stephens Eagles

n COACH: Lyndsay Baker (third season, 44-21, ninth overall)

n LAST SEASON: 24-8, second in Northwest Conference, 1-2 at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Three starters, eight letterwinners. Rosie Littleshield (5-8, sr); JaVonn Lynch (5-9, sr); Carmella Lynch (5-7, jr); Claudia Jenkins (5-4, sr); Breanna Lincoln (5-7, sr); Danika Dodge (5-7, sr); Stephanie Bell (5-8, jr); Mikey Oldman (5-7, jr).

n OUTLOOK: An interesting mix of experience and youth will shape the Eagles this winter. The core of the team has been together for two seasons already, so if the Eagles control the ball, play defense and play together like they know they can, they could be one of 1A's best squads.

Ten Sleep Pioneers

n COACH: Sarah Novak (first season, 28th overall)

n LAST SEASON: 13-11, third in Northwest Conference, qualified for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1976

n KEY RETURNERS: Aimee Abel (5-5, sr); Sarah Taylor (5-9, sr).

n OUTLOOK: With only six players on the roster, the Pioneers definitely have their work cut out for them. However, the team made state with only five players last year, so optimism is high. Team speed and defensive aggressiveness are highlights for this year's team, but obviously depth and experience are still big concerns.

Southeast Conference

Chugwater Buffaloes

n COACH: Dean Anderson

n LAST SEASON: 4-14, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2005

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Building confidence and excitement will be the Buffaloes' first tasks.

Rock River Longhorns

n COACH: Kyle Stucky (first season)

n LAST SEASON: 0-11, canceled season early

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 1987

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Kristy Bowers (5-5, sr, F); April McKinney (5-4, sr, G).

n OUTLOOK: The Longhorns have nine players on the roster this fall, so a complete season looks to be in the works for the first time since 2005-06. As expected, experience and age are not on the Longhorns' side, but the willingness to work hard and improve will help carry Rock River through the season.

Saratoga Panthers

n COACH: Amy Davis

n LAST SEASON: 6-13, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2004

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 1981

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: The Panthers have a tough schedule ahead, and if they learn from their early games, come February they will be a tough team to beat.

Southeast Cyclones

n COACH: Bart Trautwein (fourth season, 28th overall)

n LAST SEASON: 24-2, state champions

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2008

n KEY RETURNERS: Two starters. Callie Schafer (5-8, sr); Annie Humphrey (5-8, sr); Katrina Eisenbarth (5-3, sr); Chelsea Eisenbarth (5-6, jr); Kylie Hunter (5-7, sr); Shelby Weyrich (5-6, sr); Chandra Stoddard (5-6, jr); Jesselyn Burroughs (5-5, so); Kelsey Ross (5-9, so).

n OUTLOOK: The Cyclones return 10 players with state tournament experience. That, coupled with a tough defense, makes Southeast one of 1A's favorites. Even so, the team isn't big (no player is taller than 5-9) and needs to replace the leadership provided by last year's seniors.

Southwest Conference

Cokeville Panthers

n COACH: Briant Teichert

n LAST SEASON: 21-4, first in Southwest Conference, consolation champions at state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2008

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2001

n KEY RETURNERS: Michelle Hoffman (5-6, sr); Kebra Kallstrom (5-11, sr); Celinda Teichert (5-6, jr); Katelyn Teichert (5-9, jr); Torie Nielson (5-1, jr).

n OUTLOOK: Overall, the Panthers have one of the younger squads in the state, with only two seniors and three juniors. However, the team still returns a load of experience, good size and consistency in a system that everyone knows well by now. Improvement by the younger players, though, remains the key.

Encampment Tigers

n COACH: Jami Krein

n LAST SEASON: 8-15, T-second in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2005

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Encampment has been close to breaking through the past couple seasons, and now the task is to take advantage of the opportunities when they arise.

Farson Pronghorns

n COACH: Marvin Applequist

n LAST SEASON: 4-17, T-fourth in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2006

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Lillie McCallister (sr); Kellie Mines (sr); Stacey Kirk (jr); Genesis Martinez (jr); Alyx Griffin (so); Ellen McCallister (so); Stephanie Lear (so).

n OUTLOOK: Nearly everyone is back for the Pronghorns this winter, so improvement is more than just a desire - it's an expectation. The mix of experience and youth is a good one, but playing in a tough conference will test Farson's improvement every week.

Hanna Miners

n COACH: Jackie Jones (sixth season)

n LAST SEASON: 12-10, T-second in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: N/A

n KEY RETURNERS: Jennifer Korkow (5-6, jr); Penny Blauvelt (5-5, jr); Lexy Bayles (5-5, so).

n OUTLOOK: Only three players are back from last year and there are no seniors, so the Miners are starting fresh. And that's OK. The team has shown lots of determination, heart and the ability to learn quickly in early practices, so if those traits continue to shine, Hanna will find some success.

Snake River Rattlers

n COACH: Jodi Stanley

n LAST SEASON: 4-17, T-fourth in Southwest Conference, did not qualify for state tournament

n LAST STATE TOURNAMENT BERTH: 2007

n LAST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP: 2002

n KEY RETURNERS: None provided.

n OUTLOOK: Last year was tough on the Rattlers, but with a couple early victories this year they could be right back on track.
