Two future University of Wyoming athletes were named the Milward Simpson Award winners on Saturday.
Laramie's Stephen Michel and Lovell's Kristen Scheffler were named the award winners on Saturday, in conjunction with the Wyoming Sports Hall of Fame banquet.
Michel set three overall outdoor track and field state meet records as a senior. He shattered the existing state records in the 100 and 200 and also broke his own state record in the triple jump. He also won the long jump as a senior.
In indoor track, he won six state championships in his career, including four as a senior (55, 200, long jump and triple jump). He will attend Wyoming on a track scholarship.
Scheffler, a five-time all-state choice in basketball and volleyball, won the award in the girls category. Scheffler, who earned a basketball scholarship to Wyoming, scored 1,591 points in her high-school career. She was the state's Gatorade player of the year as a senior and was a three-time all-state selection in basketball.
She was also a two-time all-state choice in volleyball.
Scheffler is the fourth consecutive Simpson Award girls winner who signed with the Wyoming women's basketball team out of high school, joining Megan McGuffey (Cheyenne East, 2005), Tahnee Robinson (Lander, 2006) and Hillary Carlson (Cheyenne Central, 2007).
Both Michel and Scheffler are the first Simpson Award winners from their respective high schools in the 33-year history of the award.
Other boys finalists were Cody Emrick of Sundance, Erik Heiss of Kelly Walsh, Skyler Hoopes of Lusk and Rob Johnson of Tongue River. Girls finalists were Chelsey Lybeck of Cheyenne Central, Jordan Merback of Kelly Walsh, Maggie Ochsner of Lingle and Kelsey Scott of Douglas.
