Rawlins freshman Sydney Thorvaldson finished ninth at the 2017 Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday. Thorvaldson had the second-best finish among freshmen, completing the course in a time of 17 minutes, 58.7 seconds.

Thorvaldson won every race she competed in during the Wyoming cross-country season, culminating in a Class 3A state championship. She placed third at the Nike Cross Northwest Regional.

Cheyenne East standout Mackenzie Marler finished 22nd in the race with a time of 18:13.3. Marler’s junior Wyoming season ended in a state championship.

Wyoming’s third representative at the Nike Cross Nationals, Cheyenne Central senior Aubrey Frentheway, took 25th by finishing in 18:16.8. Frentheway, a former state champion, took second behind Marler at the state meet this season.

While Thorvaldson, Marler and Frentheway finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, at the regional meet they were the top three finishers at the national meet among the five runners that qualified from the northwest regional.

The winner of the girls’ championship race at Nike Cross Nationals, sophomore Katelyn Tuohy from New York, set a course record by winning with a time of 16:44.7.

Wyoming failed to qualify anyone for the boys’ championship race after Laramie senior Albert Steiner finished eighth at the Nike Cross Northwest Regional.
