BOYS

1NW Worland Warriors

Coach: Ron Overcast

Record: 14-1-0

Record vs other teams at state: 9-0-0

State appearances: 12

Last year: 1-2 at state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: No Class 3A team has defeated the Warriors this year and it’s because of a defense that allowed just nine goals all year. That first state title appears to be within reach.

3SE Torrington Trailblazers

Coach: Jesh Arnusch

Record: 9-7-1

Record vs other teams at state: 3-4-1

State appearances: 10

Last year: state runners-up

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: It’s been a disappointing season for the Blazers, but they have tournament experience and 3A leading-scorer Nathan Stitt (35 goals) on their side.

1SE Rawlins Outlaws

Coach: Erly Cornejo

Record: 7-8-1

Record vs other teams at state: 2-6-1

State appearances: 1

Last year: did not qualify for state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: Gerardo Lopez leads the Outlaws with nine goals and, with zero expectations, the Outlaws may not stop at just the first state tournament in program history.

3NW Powell Panthers

Coach: Jeff Dent

Record: 4-9-2

Record vs other teams at state: 0-7-0

State appearances: 9

Last year: did not qualify for state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: Following an upset shootout victory over Douglas, the Panthers return to the state tournament with an improving defense and nothing to lose.

1NE Buffalo Bison

Coach: Dick Edgcomb

Record: 10-7-0

Record vs other teams at state: 4-3-0

State appearances: 17

Last year: 0-2 at state

State championships/most recent: 3/2013

Outlook: Buffalo has scored more goals (59) than any other 3A team and Luke Glassock is a main reason why, leading the charge with 25. The Bison have been tough to beat since their offense came around.

2SE Lander Tigers

Coach: Dean Schaff

Record: 10-6-0

Record vs other teams at state: 5-4-0

State appearances: 19

Last year: 3rd at state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: The Tigers have been one of the best teams in the state since the Southwest Invitational and that confidence helped them shut out Pinedale 4-0 in the qualifying game.

1SW Star Valley Braves

Coach: Shane Hokum

Record: 11-3-1

Record vs other teams at state: 7-2-0

State appearances: 9

Last year: consolation champs

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: The Braves are the only team to have two players with 20-plus goals (Gerson Lozano 21, Noah Hutchinson 20) and may be the team to beat.

2NW Cody Broncs

Coach: Cory Jansma

Record: 10-7-0

Record vs other teams at state: 2-6-0

State appearances: 15

Last year: state champs

State championships/most recent: 4/2017

Outlook: Cody will need to recapture some of that state championship energy in order to overcome Star Valley, which defeated the Broncs 9-1 on May 5.

GIRLS

1NW Cody Fillies

Coach: Marian Miears

Record: 13-2-0

Record vs other teams at state: 9-1-0

State appearances: 13

Last year: state champs

State championships/most recent: 2/2017

Outlook: The Fillies have lost just once all year to a 3A team and have allowed just 11 goals to lead the classification. It’s going to take a lot to dethrone these champions.

2SW Riverton Wolverines

Coach: Tanya Santee

Record: 4-10-2

Record vs other teams at state: 1-7-1

State appearances: 13

Last year: 0-2 at state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: Riverton remains an outside candidate for an upset as the Wolverines are led by Cydney Bradley’s five goals.

1SE Lander Tigers

Coach: Gabe Joyes

Record: 7-7-1

Record vs other teams at state: 3-5-1

State appearances: 15

Last year: 1-2 at state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: Abigail Renner and Molly Fehringer lead the Tigers this year, who have been plagued by inconsistent play this season.

2NE Buffalo Bison

Coach: Mike Sauers

Record: 8-7-3

Record vs other teams at state: 4-3-1

State appearances: 18

Last year: 3rd at state

State championships/most recent: 2/2014

Outlook: That early competition has paid off as the Bison have leading scorer Addy Sweckard and one of the best defenses in 3A right now.

1NE Douglas Bearcats

Coach: Ron Wagner

Record: 9-5-2

Record vs other teams at state: 5-4-1

State appearances: 1

Last year: did not qualify for state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: The Bearcats can score (Andi Hunsicker’s 14 goals) and stop (Alexa Williams’ 117 saves). Not only are they in their first state tournament, they came to make noise.

2SE Rawlins Outlaws

Coach: Brooke Mendez

Record: 7-7-2

Record vs other teams at state: 2-5-0

State appearances: 2

Last year: 0-2 at state

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: No other goalkeeper in Class 3A has made as many saves as Jordan Jerome’s 181 for the Outlaws. As long as she’s back there, they have a chance.

1SW Star Valley Braves

Coach: Sandy Buckstaff

Record: 8-6-2

Record vs other teams at state: 2-3-2

State appearances: 8

Last year: consolation champs

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: The Braves hit their stride and looked good in the last two weeks of the season. Then good turned into great after the win over Cody. Now Star Valley has gold in sight.

2NW Worland Warriors

Coach: Danielle Warren

Record: 11-6-0

Record vs other teams at state: 6-4-0

State appearances: 11

Last year: state runners-up

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: The toughest conference in 3A girls may come in handy for the Warriors, as they’ll need to harness that experience in order to beat the Braves.
