LAS VEGAS - Dean Gorsuch threw his black cowboy hat into air, cracked a big smile and let out a holler.

His job at Kinder Morgan was never this much fun.

The former Eastern Wyoming College cowboy won the world steer wrestling championship on Saturday night, capping a nearly flawless performance at the 48th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with a 3.6-second run.

"It means the world. You can't even imagine how much this means to me," said Gorsuch, who finished sixth in the world standings last year, his first as a full-time contestant on the PRCA circuit. "It's the second-best feeling to my son (Taydon) being born. It's awesome."

Remarkably, Gorsuch won the aggregate by more than 10 seconds after grounding 10 steers in 47.80 seconds. He placed in five rounds, including a victory in the fifth round.

"I ran at it every night. I just tried to do my best," he said. "You get caught safetying-up in this arena… you're going to get screwed up. You've got to run at it every night."

Even with a commanding lead in the aggregate, Gorsuch said he never considered playing it safe in the final round. The result? He finished in second place, one-tenth a second behind K.C. Jones.

"I wanted to go out and run my run," said Gorsuch, who quit his job as a pipeline welder at Kinder Morgan last year to dedicate himself to pro rodeo. "If I broke the barrier going for the world title, I'd break the barrier."

Gorsuch wasn't the only contestant with Wyoming ties to strike it rich at the Super Bowl of pro rodeo.

Carpenter's Brandie Halls (barrel racing), Casper's Jhett Johnson (team roping), Pavillion's Andy Martinez (bareback riding) and Gillette's Bobby Welsh (bull riding) all finished in the top four in their respective events.

They followed Gorsuch's lead, improving upon their 2005 finish in the world standings.

n Halls, who didn't qualify for the NFR a year ago, set an arena record with a 13.52-second run in the eighth round, placed in six rounds and wound up fourth in the world.

Despite tipping a barrel in each of the final two rounds, Halls pocketed $73,647 at the 10-day finals, easily surpassing her regular-season winnings of $55,889. She entered the finals in 14th place.

n Johnson partnered with Montana cowboy Travis Tryan to finish second in the aggregate, good for more than $33,000 in prize money. He ended up fourth in the world standings, two spots better than last year.

n Martinez finished in fourth place in the world with nearly $145,000 despite a lackluster NFR performance. Although the former Central Wyoming College star rode all 10 broncs, he won just $20,156. That was $100,000 less than Will Lowe, who won his third world title in four years.

"It feels like it's the first time you won," Lowe said, humbly.

A year ago, Martinez finished fifth in bareback riding.

n Welsh jumped seven spots in the world standings this year, finishing third with $173,793, about $20,000 more than he had won entering the 2006 season. He placed in four rounds and was second in the aggregate.

How well is Welsh riding? He challenged for the world title despite competing at some 20 fewer rodeos than most other bull riders.

"I'm just gonna keep doing what I did this year," said Welsh, who has three children, Madison, Colt and Hayden, with his wife Sunny. "That's a desire of mine, to ride bulls, but I want to watch my (children) grow up. That's a desire in my heart, too."

NFR NOTES

n Trevor Brazile, who qualified for the NFR in team roping and tie-down roping, set a PRCA single-season earnings record with more than $329,924, eclipsing the mark set last year by bull rider Matt Austin ($322,766).

n Event champions Will Lowe (bareback riding) and Cody Ohl (tie-down roping) set PRCA single-season earnings records in their respective events. Lowe pocketed $280,226.64; Ohl $298,111.71.

n Wisconsin bull rider B.J. Schumacher established a PRCA record for most money won at a single rodeo ($142,644). He capped his remarkable NFR performance with a 92.5-point ride that won the final round.

n Of the 118 contestants at the NFR, Utah bull rider Steve Woolsey was the only one who didn't win a check. A year after finishing second at the NFR and in the world standings, Woolsey was bucked off 10 times.

n Louisiana saddle bronc rider Cody DeMoss has become pro rodeo's ultimate bridesmaid. He's finished second in the world standings each of the past three years.

n The PRCA has signed an agreement with Sport Graphics, an Indianapolis, Ind.-based printing and design company, to build and operate its official Web site (www.prorodeo.com). The site, which had been partnered with ESPN since 2003, will feature a new look and redesign, beginning Jan. 1.
