LAS VEGAS - Former Chadron State cowboy Dustin Elliott rode Foolish Man to a score of 88.5 on Tuesday to win the sixth round of bull riding the National Finals Rodeo.
Elliott took firm control of third place in the aggregate with 265 points on three rides.
Gillette cowboy Bobby Welsh continued his solid week with a third-place showing on Tuesday. Welsh rode South Point Casino XS Energy to an 87.5 and holds second place in the aggregate with 329 on four rides.
Elliott had his grandfather, who was recently admitted to a Las Vegas hospital, on his mind Tuesday.
"Last year, my grandma had a brain aneurysm and had to have brain surgery while she was in Vegas," Elliott said. "Well, this year, grandpa has something internally and is bleeding inside, so he's been in the hospital. He's getting out soon, but we'll be off soon to visit him."
B.J. Schumacher leads the event with 434 on five head.
Wyoming riders also fared well in the bareback competition, but the group is likely out of contention for a world title.
Mills' Kelly Timberman finished second Tuesday with an 85.5 aboard Just 4U. Former University of Wyoming rider Forest Bramwell was third (84.5) and Pavillion's Anthony Martinez was fourth (83.5).
Timberman is sixth in the aggregate and Martinez seventh.
Defending world champion Will Lowe leads the aggregate and holds a $74,000 lead over Martinez in the world standings.
Lowe has won more than $62,000 at the NFR and has more than $214,000 in earnings this season.
Carpenter cowgirl Brandie Halls rebounded from a rough run on Monday to place second in barrel racing on Tuesday.
Halls, who moved up one spot to sixth in the world standings, rode her horse Slim to a time of 13.71 seconds.
Halls is sixth in the aggregate and world standings. She trails Kelly Maben by $51,000 in the world standings.
Maben posted an arena record Tuesday and won her fourth round at the NFR with a time of 13.58.
Maben said her horse, Bubba, couldn't have run the barrels any better.
"If (the dirt) has a little slide to it where they can get a hold of it, he can go and leave the barrels," she said.
In steer wrestling, Luke Branquinho and former Eastern Wyoming College cowboy Dean Gorsuch continue to lead.
Branquinho shared the top spot on Tuesday with a 3.7-second run, and he also cut into Gorsuch's lead in the world standings.
Gorsuch leads by just over $4,000, and he also stands second in the aggregate.
"When you get to Vegas, there is so much excitement that I try to block it out and go make good runs," Branquinho said. "It's worked out three times. The other three times, not so good. I've got four steers left and, hopefully, I can do it good there."
Powell native K.C. Jones picked up his second check at the NFR by finishing sixth Tuesday with a run of 5.4 seconds. He stands seventh in the aggregate and 12th in the world standings.
Heeler Jhett Johnson and teammate Travis Tryan struggled in team roping. The two struggled with their timing for the first 20 seconds of their run before roping their calf in 26.8 seconds.
Johnson stands fourth in the aggregate and 11th in the world standings.
In the all-around, Trevor Brazile increased his lead to over $112,000. Brazile has earned $310,801, and Joe Beaver is second with $197,005 after six rounds.
Tuesday's round also featured an emotional tribute to a fallen bull rider.
Two years ago, Shane Drury returned to the arena after a second surgery to remove cancer that originated in his chest cavity and spread to nearby areas. He then traveled with Elliott, the eventual 2004 world champion bull rider.
On Oct. 31, Drury died after a four-year battle with his disease. Prior to Tuesday's competition, Drury and nine other friends of professional rodeo and the Wrangler NFR who passed away during the past year were posthumously recognized as part of the annual Memorial Night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The NFR continues through Saturday.
