LAS VEGAS - Bobby Welsh worked for 8 seconds on Friday night.
They were the richest 8 seconds of his life.
The only bull rider to make the whistle in the ninth round of the 48th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Welsh pocketed the entire $51,000 in prize money to vault into fourth place in the world standings.
No wonder his wife, Sunny, was jumping and waving her arms uncontrollably in the stands at the Thomas & Mack Center.
"I'm sure she's more tickled than I am," said Welsh, who placed for the fourth time at this year's Super Bowl of pro rodeo. "I guess I didn't even think about being the only one to ride with all these great bull riders here. To win $51,000, that's a praise
report."
On a night when B.J. Schumacher (bull riding) and Chad Ferley (saddle bronc riding) clinched world championships, Welsh collected the fattest paycheck.
Although the Gillette bull rider can count only $16,021.63 of his Friday winnings n the first-place check in each round - toward the world standings, Welsh moved up three spots in the world standings and the aggregate.
After the first five bull riders were thrown to the ground, Welsh rode Western Hauler for 85 points, handling the black and white bull as well as Schumacher did in the third round.
Coincidentally, Schumacher was the only cowboy to ride that night.
"I'd seen that bull before and I'd never seen it rode past three seconds until B.J. did it," said Welsh, who pushed his yearly earnings over $140,000. "I knew if I could get around the corner, my odds got a lot better. But pray to God, I was there."
Welsh was the only Wyoming contestant to win money on Friday night.
But Dean Gorsuch, the former Eastern Wyoming College cowboy, moved a step closer to winning the steer wrestling title. Despite a 5.8-second run, Gorsuch remained in second place in the world standings, about $22,000 behind California cowboy Luke Branquinho, and increased his lead in the aggregate to 11 seconds. If Gorsuch wins the aggregate, which pays about $41,000, he'll easily vault Branquinho.
One night after setting an arena record in barrel racing, Carpenter cowgirl Brandie Halls knocked over the third barrel and dropped to fifth in the world standings.
Still, Halls has enjoyed a remarkable nine days in Las Vegas. She's won nearly $67,000, about $11,000 more than she earned during the regular season.
The chase for the barrel racing championship is one of the few intriguing storylines heading into tonight's final round. Oklahoma cowgirl Mary Burger, a 58-year-old grandmother, placed fifth in the ninth round to assume first place in the world standings.
But only $8,000 separates Burger from Texas cowgirl Brittany Pozzi, who tops the aggregate. Kelly Maben, another Texas cowgirl who has won four rounds, is in second place, about $3,000 behind Burger.
