World EldEr AbusE AWArEnEss dAy is JunE 15. Elder abuse is the harming of an older person. It can include neglect, physical, emotional, financial, or sexual abuse. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, about 1 in 10 Americans age 60+ have experienced abuse. Anyone can help with prevention. • Learn the signs of elder abuse and neglect. • Prevent isolation. Regularly call or visit an elderly person and ask how he or she is doing. • Volunteer to be a “friendly visitor” to a nursing home resident or to a homebound senior in your neighborhood. • Provide respite breaks for a caregiver. • Encourage your bank manager to train tellers to detect and report possible elder financial abuse. • Encourage your doctor to include questions about family violence in consultations with elderly patients. • Support local organizations such as senior centers, food banks and transit systems that provide services to seniors, people with disabilities and their caregivers. • Most cases of elder abuse go undetected. If you suspect an elder is being mistreated, call your local Adult Protective Services agency or law enforcement.
