Sheldon Clifford Henderson, 90, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Douglas Care Center in Douglas, Wyoming.
Sheldon was born in Randolph, Utah on Sunday, December 26, 1926 the son of Clifford Newton and Sylvia Jane (Snowball) Henderson. He attended school in Evanston, Wyoming for twelve years and graduated in 1945. Despite being drafted into the United State Army in February of his senior year, Sheldon graduated as valedictorian and was awarded the Honor Scholarship.
Sheldon was a veteran and served in the 11th Airborne Division from March, 1945 until November, 1946. After being honorably discharged as a technical sergeant he met and married Norma Jean Gustafson of Chugwater, Wyoming, in Evanston on August 23, 1947. They were married for fifty years until Jean’s death on May 28, 1998. The couple eventually settled in Glenrock, Wyoming, where he lived until his death. They had two sons, Craig, born in 1953, and Bret, born in 1959.
Sheldon received a B.S. Degree in June, 1951 from the University of Utah, and a M. A. Degree in 1954. He received a Doctorate of Education in 1969 from the University of Wyoming. He taught social studies from 1951 to 1954 at the Worland, Wyoming High School. He was later Principal and teacher in Glenrock, Wyoming from 1954 to 1958. He was then given the Superintendent of Schools position in Glenrock where he served until 1981. During this tenure as Superintendent he oversaw the building of five school buildings, and became Principal of the new Oregon Trail Grade School until his retirement in 1987.
All of Sheldon’s professional accomplishments are too numerous to mention, but he was a life member of the National Education Association, a Past Vice-President and President of the Wyoming Association of School Administrators, Wyoming Activities Association, Republican Central Committee, State Retirement Board Chairman, State Committee for School Finance, Glenrock Lions Club, Treasurer and President, and Recipient of the First Citizen Award by the Glenrock Chamber of Commerce.
Sheldon was an avid fly fisherman and golfer. He enjoyed hunting, hiking, camping, carpentry, weightlifting, and gardening. He and Jean led a very active social life with their many friends and relatives.
Sheldon was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; sisters, Mary and Carol; and brother, Dale.
He is survived by sons, Craig (Paula) and Bret; three granddaughters, Deidra, Taryn, and Katlyn; and three great grandchildren, Sage, Matthew, and Ashlyn; and brother, Jim.
Sheldon was cremated and a private ceremony will be held later.
