Wyoming health officials have identified two more cases of coronavirus, bringing the state’s total on Sunday evening to 26. The new cases were identified in Fremont and Laramie counties.
The Laramie County patient is in their 50s and lives in Cheyenne, according to an announcement released Sunday evening by the City of Cheyenne. That brings the total number of cases in Cheyenne to six.
“The individual has had contact with another patient who previously tested positive and will be quarantined at home,” the city’s announcement stated.
The new Fremont County case involves an older woman with a connection to a previously identified case, a Wyoming Health Department spokeswoman said Sunday evening. The woman was hospitalized and then released.
The latest cases cap off a week that saw the closure of Wyoming schools and several types of businesses in an effort to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. The number of positively identified cases jumped from three to 26.
The Wyoming Public Health Laboratory has to date tested 432 people. Another 51 tests have been performed by commercial labs, with one tests done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Nationally, lab tests had confirmed nearly 32,000 cases of coronavirus cases as of Sunday afternoon, according to the New York Times. However, tests remain in short supply, and health experts say the actual number of cases is almost certainly higher. The disease has caused 400 deaths.
COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, is a respiratory illness whose symptoms include fever, shortness of breath and coughing. It is especially deadly for the elderly, for those with compromised immune systems and those with chronic health conditions.
