Twenty years ago, a gay University of Wyoming student was brutally attacked and left to die on a lonely plot of land near Laramie. On that night in 1998, Matthew Shepard became a symbol — one that forced Wyomingites and all Americans to confront difficult truths. Now, the Star-Tribune examines the legacy of the kind and outgoing man from Casper and how it still resonates today.
