CHEYENNE - Strong wind across eastern Wyoming has prompted the National Weather Service to issue an air quality alert for the Powder River Basin.

Such alerts have to do with dust blowing from coal mines. They urge children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems to stay indoors and avoid excessive physical exertion.

This alert is in effect until 6 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service says it issues about 10 air quality alerts for the Powder River Basin each year. The latest alert coincides with wind gusts up to 50 mph.
