On behalf of palliative care providers and patients across Wyoming, I want to thank Sen. John Barrasso for forming the bipartisan Comprehensive Care Caucus in the Senate. As the first Senate caucus of its kind, this group will be working to ensure more Americans suffering from serious illness can benefit from the comprehensive care, comfort and support that palliative care provides.
Along with raising public awareness, the Comprehensive Care Caucus will work with advocacy groups, like the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, to support policies that will expand access to palliative care and address challenges faced by providers and caregivers. Past experience has shown that improvements in access to palliative care services have helped patients save money while also improving their care outcomes. Supporting this type of care is one of those few bipartisan moves that appeals to budget-hawks and bleeding hearts alike.
With the creation of this caucus, Sen. Barrasso and his colleagues are taking an important step to improve America’s healthcare system and promote advances in palliative care. When Wyoming struggles with access to palliative care due to its rural nature, this caucus has potential to profoundly impact the lives of seriously ill patients in our state. I applaud Sen. Barrasso and I’m optimistic about what this caucus can achieve with the benefit of his leadership.
