Burrough: Energy industry is sage grouse scapegoat

What does industry have to do with sage grouse? Industry is a cash cow, a target for yet another scare story to save grouse from extinction. Federal agencies are unwilling or unwitting facilitators of this tyranny. Industry pays off such groups as Wild Earth Guardians like a Mafia shakedown. Where does the money go?

Who is the "no-name" lawyer/activist who pushes injunction? They should be sued for work stoppages, lost jobs and financial loss.

Sage grouse are little mentioned by trappers, mountain men or Lewis and Clark as a major food source. Who knows the prehistoric population numbers? Predation limits this species by numerous aerial avian threats and canine species. The BLM's influence is habitat. A simple windshield survey of rangeland landscapes dispels the notion Wyoming is lacking brush. Pioneers introduced sheep and cattle and jealously defended them from predators. Toxicant use, hunting and cattle pour-ons for grub control eliminated magpies, ravens, hawks, even eagles. Loss of the fur industry spelled a release of pressure on coyotes, foxes and other four-footed predators. Sage grouse population numbers bounded exponentially during years when predation was almost nonexistent.

The use of nitrogen fertilizer reduced clover and favored grasses on haying operations. Broad leafs like alfalfa and irrigated meadows near water are magnets for grouse. Avian diseases from bird migrations, mosquito-borne diseases and severe weather events spell changes in populations. These are forgotten by naturalists who only focus on mining or oil and gas production, slandering them as causing sage grouse declines. Industry cares for wildlife, even protects it from hunting in their production fields. Reclamation favors livestock and wildlife species of all kinds. Roads and traffic are another story. Interstate highways are biological deserts ignored by Wild Earth Guardian types. Highways and paved cities are biological deserts. There are no sage grouse to be found there. Why not enjoin paved highways and stop commerce and transportation?

Tyrannical edicts against the energy sector ignore truth. Like housing chickens to keep out foxes, chickens with abundant feed will disappear if predation is ignored. Extinction is false.
