After two pandemic summers, many families are venturing back into what they hope will be a more normal summer-camp experience. Kids can feel trepidation going to in-person camp after two years of hybrid school schedules and learning online. Camping experts say parents at home can smooth the way. They encourage parents to communicate with camp directors about how their child handles adversity and what strategies tend to help. They also advise parents not to focus their letters on how much they miss their kids. Instead, tell them how excited you are about the experiences they must be having and encourage them to just have fun. And crucially: Prepare them in advance about any policies limiting the use of phones and other devices.

With a string of 14 No. 1 hits, country star Luke Combs made the professional leap into stadiums this year on his ascent to the genre's peak. But at home, his focus now is on being a new parent after the birth of his son on Father's Day. The reigning CMA entertainer of the year says figuring out this new journey is “mildly stressful, but also really exciting.” With his new album “Growin' Up,” Combs is reflecting on this transitional period on songs like “Doin' This.” But he says that his stadium shows aren't a bunch of bells and whistles. The Supreme Court's decision eliminating the constitutional right to abortion is causing anxiety for people in same-sex marriages, particularly those with children. The decision last week overturning Roe v. Wade didn't directly affect the 2015 ruling that paved the way for gay marriage. But lawyers say now they're getting questions from same-sex couples worried about the legal status of their marriages and keeping their children. Alabama lawyer Sydney Duncan has received dozens of emails and calls in just a few days. Justice Clarence Thomas has called on colleagues to reconsider cases that allowed same-sex marriage, gay sex and contraception.

President Joe Biden is celebrating that virtually all Americans can now get a COVID-19 shot after the authorization of vaccines for kids under 5 over the weekend. Biden on Tuesday visited a vaccination clinic in Washington, where some of the first shots were given to what had been the last major age group ineligible for vaccines. Biden is hailing it as an important a pandemic milestone that that will support the country’s recovery. While anyone age 6 months and up is now eligible for vaccines, the administration is cautioning that it expects the pace of shots for the youngest kids to be slower than older ones, as parents are more likely to rely on their children’s pediatricians to administer them.

Rhetoric against LGBTQ people is now targeting drag storytimes with interruptions and other protests around the country during Pride Month. At one recent event outside San Francisco, members of the extremist Proud Boys walked in and began hurling insults at a drag queen as she read to children and their parents. Organizers of the reading programs say that they have faced pushback from the beginning but that the recent vitriol is new. They say opponents who claim they want to protect children are actually just scaring and endangering them. And they say they plan to enhance security but won’t stop their reading programs.

The heart of Cooper Raiff's sophomore feature “Cha Cha Real Smooth," available now on Apple TV+, isn't his post-grad character who is living back at his mother's suburban home, working a dead end job and wondering what to do with his life. It's the mother and daughter he meets while attending a bar mitzvah with his little brother. Dakota Johnson plays the young mother with an autistic teenage daughter. Raiff was inspired to write this mother-daughter relationship because of his own sister, who is disabled. A nationwide casting search led them to Vanessa Burghardt, an autistic actor who is making her film debut.
