Wyoming/New Mexico Game

Wyoming' Andrew Wingard tackles New Mexico running back Daryl Chestnut during their game Oct. 28, 2017 at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.

Wyoming senior safety Andrew Wingard was named a second-team preseason all-American selection by NFLDraftScout.com last week. The two-time all-Mountain West selection was one of four Group of Five players named to the first or second team, joining Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver (first), Toledo punt returner Diante Johnson (second) and Memphis kick returner Tony Pollard (second).

Wingard was a member of the Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back), Bronko Nagurski Award (best defensive player) and Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player) watch lists last year. Wingard was also on the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award in 2016, when he was named a semifinalist.

Wingard is currently fourth among active Football Bowl Subdivision players in total career tackles, averaging 9.41 per game. His 5.85 solo tackles per game in his career are second-best among active FBS defenders.

He was a freshman all-American in 2015 per the Football Writers Association of America when he became the first freshman Cowboy to record 100 tackles in a season.
