McDonald, a 1964 graduate of Wayland Baptist, was the Cowgirls' coach for nine years (1975-83). During that time Wyoming was 123-114, including a 25-7 mark in the 1978-79 season that earned McDonald conference coach of the year honors.

Prior to NCAA women's basketball, Wayland Baptist put together a 131-game winning streak from 1953-58 and won 10 AAU national championships.
