Trent Pikula has been named the first head football coach at Thunder Basin High School in Gillette, sources confirmed to the Star-Tribune on Wednesday.

Pikula was the head football coach at Rapid City (South Dakota) Central from 2006-13 after a coaching stint in Hot Springs, South Dakota. He has stayed on as a teacher at Rapid City Central since stepping down as football coach. Pikula is a graduate of Campbell County High School.

Other fall sports coaching hires at Thunder Basin so far include: Josh Bott (boys and girls swimming), Terri Hinkel (cross-country), Kameron Hunter (golf) and Paul Stevens (tennis).

Bott is currently the head boys and girls swimming coach at Gillette, leading the girls team to five state championships in his six years there. Hinkel was an assistant cross-country coach at Gillette the past two years.

Longtime Gillette wrestling coach Tom Seamans will be the activities director at Thunder Basin, which will compete in Class 4A in all sports beginning in the 2017-18 school year.
