Rawlins' Sydney Thorvaldson approaches the finish line of the Class 3A girls race of the Wyoming State High School Cross-Country Championships on Oct. 30 in Sheridan.

Rawlins sophomore Sydney Thorvaldson furthered her legend by winning the Nike Cross Northwest Regional in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday, finishing in a time of 17 minutes, 24.1 seconds. That was enough to win by nearly 14 seconds.

Thorvaldson led a number of Wyoming athletes who competed at the annual event. Cheyenne Central senior Claudia Miller finished 12th in women’s championship 5k, running an 18:09.4.

With Saturday’s finishes, those two qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland on Dec. 1.

Laramie junior Abigail Whitman came in 39th (18:44.1) and Natrona County freshman Delilah Baedke ran a 19:07.6 to finish 54th. Cheyenne East’s Mackenzie Marler finished 85th and Cody’s Riley Smith came in 93rd. Natrona County duo of Avery Potter and Hailie Wilhelm took 107th and 108th, respectively. Filly teammate Madyson Willis was 120th.

On the boys side, Star Valley’s Asefa Wetzel finished 40th (16:07.4) while teammate Peter Visser came in 44th. Natrona County’s Connor Etzelmiller finished 63rd and Class 4A champion Weston Wiley was 67th.
