A pair of golfers who helped the Kelly Walsh Trojans win a third consecutive state championship signed their letters of intent to golf in college at the high school’s team room on Friday.
Reigning Class 4A individual champion Taj Sutherland signed to continue his golf career at the University of Texas-Rio Grande. Sutherland won the title with a six-stroke cushion thanks to his cumulative 146.
That was the culmination of Sutherland’s successful senior year where he averaged 71.6 per round, including season-best 66 in the first round of the Sheridan Invitational.
Over the summer Sutherland tied for 51st at the 2019 High School Golf National Invitational in Orlando, Florida.

Texas-Rio Grande is an NCAA Division I member school and competes in the Western Athletic Conference. Russel Sprecher signed with Eastern Wyoming College.
He shot a two-round 163 at the 4A state meet in September that tied him for eighth individually. The senior finished with an average round 75 this season.
He shot a personal-best 70 on the first day of the Casper Invitational.
He also golfed through the spring season and into the summer, where he tied for 98th at the 2019 High School Golf National Invitational in Orlando, Florida. There he shot a combined 163.
Sprecher will join the Lancers, who had just sophomore Colby Clay (Laramie) as its lone Wyomingite on roster this fall.
