The Wyoming high school spring sports season will not kick off as planned. Both the annual Casper Soccer Jamboree and Glen Legler Early Bird Invitational track meet have been canceled due to inclement weather.

Kelly Walsh activities director AJ Nathan confirmed the news about the Casper Jamboree to the Star-Tribune via text message Thursday. A day earlier he hoped some games could be salvaged by playing on only Saturday, but even that plan was overly optimistic.

Natrona County activities director Bryan Honken was not hopeful about the school’s chances of hosting the meet this weekend when he responded to a Star-Tribune email Thursday morning. Natrona County activities secretary Jennifer Horning confirmed the meet’s cancellation Thursday afternoon.

If not for the “bomb cyclone” winter storm that swept its way across the Front Range from the early hours of Wednesday morning through Thursday morning then Casper would have hosted both events simultaneously, like in years past.

All Cheyenne high schools, both Gillette high schools, Sheridan, Evanston and Buffalo were among the schools scheduled to meet in Casper for soccer games spread throughout Kelly Walsh’s Tom Staffileno Activities Complex, Natrona County’s Cheney Alumni Field and the North Casper Soccer Complex on Friday and Saturday.

A multitude of high schools, ranging from Big Piney to Wheatland, Sheridan to Rawlins, were scheduled to meet at Natrona County for the annual track meet that typically begins the outdoor track season but will instead have an open weekend to start the season. Some teams could try to participate in the Wind River Invitational instead. The only other in-state track meet scheduled for this weekend will go on as planned, Wind River activities director James Cunningham confirmed to the Star-Tribune.

March 22 has become the official kick-off date for the spring sports season. Natrona County is scheduled to host the Natrona Track and Field Invitational that day, at the same time Kelly Walsh soccer teams host Evanston. Natrona County soccer teams are scheduled to host Evanston the following day.
