Outlook: Last year’s promising season ended with a surprising loss to a No. 4 seed from Casper. The undefeated Bolts are in position to move past that hurdle.

4W Kelly Walsh Trojans

Coach: Bryan Chadderdon

Record: 8-7-1

Record vs other teams at state: 3-4-1

State appearances: 19

Last year: 1-2 at state.

State championships/most recent: 6/2012

Outlook: The Trojans finished the regular season strong before dropping two straight matches going into state. They lost momentum going into possibly their toughest match of the year.

2W Green River Wolves

Coach: Chris Bieber

Record: 9-8-2

Record vs other teams at state: 3-5-0

State appearances: 14

Last year: 3rd at state.

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: A shift in formation has helped the Wolves fulfill their promise and their defense looks as good as anyone’s in the state.

3E Cheyenne East Thunderbirds

Coach: Ryan Cameron

Record: 9-5-1

Record vs other teams at state: 3-4-1

State appearances: 25

Last year: 0-2 at state

State championships/most recent: 8/2017

Outlook: The Thunderbirds have only one loss — a shootout loss to Central at regionals — in their last eight games. It’s going to take a lot to sidetrack this team.

2E Cheyenne Central Indians

Coach: Tim Denisson

Record: 10-4-1

Record vs other teams at state: 4-4-0

State appearances: 29

Last year: State runners-up.

State championships/most recent: 7/2015

Outlook: With two quality scorers, Central could be primed for a run at its third straight championship game appearance.

3W Jackson Broncs

Coach: Matt Hoelscher

Record: 9-5-1

Record vs other teams at state: 4-4-0

State appearances: 12

Last year: Did not qualify for state.

State championships/most recent: 4/2016 (all in Class 3A)

Outlook: Emotion could favor the upset-minded Broncs after they scored two regional wins to make their first Class 4A state tournament.

1W Star Valley Braves

Coach: Shane Hokum

Record: 11-3-1

Record vs other teams at state: 5-2-1

State appearances: 10

Last year: State runners-up in 3A.

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: Suddenly, the Braves find themselves as possibly the hottest team in Wyoming in their first year in Class 4A since 2011.

4E Gillette Camels

Coach: Chris McMackin

Record: 5-11-0

Record vs other teams at state: 1-7-0

State appearances: 21

Last year: Did not qualify for state.

State championships/most recent: 1/1994

Outlook: The Camels come in wounded but with nothing to lose after not qualifying for state last year.

GIRLS

1E Cheyenne Central Indians

Coach: Jeff Norman

Record: 13-1-0

Record vs other teams at state: 7-1-0

State appearances: 21

Last year: State champs.

State championships/most recent: 4/2018

Outlook: The defending champions are on a roll and are seeking the program’s first back-to-back state titles.

4W Star Valley Braves

Coach: Sandy Buckstaff

Record: 5-11-2

Record vs other teams at state: 0-8-0

State appearances: 9

Last year: 1-2 in 3A.

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: The Braves enter as the biggest underdog in the tournament after having won just three of the last nine matches.

2W Kelly Walsh Trojans

Coach: Jerry Realing

Record: 13-4-0

Record vs other teams at state: 5-4-0

State appearances: 22

Last year: 0-2 at state.

State championships/most recent: 2/2005

Outlook: The Trojans march into this year’s tournament with speed and a strong senior class ready to make the leap out of the quarterfinals.

3E Laramie Plainsmen

Coach: Raquel Clark

Record: 8-8-0

Record vs other teams at state: 2-7-0

State appearances: 22

Last year: 3rd at state.

State championships/most recent: 4/2016

Outlook: A late-season push has the Plainsmen back in Jackson and playing with confidence at the right time.

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: The high-scoring Bolts’ offense returns to the state tournament with hopes of eventually conquering Cheyenne Central.

3W Jackson Broncs

Coach: Kristen Pizarro

State appearances: 15

Last year: 1-2 at state.

State championships/most recent: 7/2016 (all in Class 3A)

Outlook: Comprised of mostly underclassmen, the Broncs return to the state tournament ready to continue their current momentum.

1W Rock Springs Tigers

Coach: Stephen Pyer

Record: 18-0-0

Record vs other teams at state: 8-0-0

State appearances: 12

Last year: Consolation champs.

State championships/most recent: 0

Outlook: Only one team — Kelly Walsh — has scored against the Tigers, who enter this year’s tournament with goals beyond just a quarterfinal win.

4E Cheyenne East Thunderbirds

Coach: Rebecca Valdez

Record: 11-4-0

Record vs other teams at state: 4-4-0

State appearances: 22

Last year: Did not qualify for state.

State championships/most recent: 10/2015

Outlook: After two regional losses abruptly ended the T-Birds’ seven-match undefeated shutout streak, they look to regain their mid-season form.
