State Track - Saturday

Rawlins' Sydney Thorvaldson smiles at cheering fans in the bleachers while cruising to the state title in the Class 3A girls 1600-meter run May 18 during the Wyoming State High School Track and Field Championships at Harry Geldien Stadium in Casper.

Rawlins' Sydney Thorvaldson put the finishing touches on her outstanding sophomore season Thursday when she was named Wyoming's Gatorade Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

It is the third Gatorade honor for Thorvaldson, who has won back-to-back cross country awards.

At the Wyoming State High School Track and Field Championships in May, Thorvaldson won the 800-, the 1600- and 3200-meter runs as well as running the anchor leg on the Outlaws' 1600 sprint medley relay team.

Thorvaldson set a Class 3A state record in the 1600 with a time of 5 minutes, 0.52 seconds to break the mark she set at last year's meet. The sprint medley team also set a Class 3A record with a time of 4:18.05.

The sophomore standout also excelled outside the Wyoming borders. She finished second in the 3200 at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational on April 10 in Los Angeles with a 10:12.18, which was the No. 10 mark in the country at the time. And on June 15 at the Brooks PR Invitational in Walla Walla, Washington, Thorvaldson finished fourth in the 2-mile run with a time of 10:20.75.
