After a slow start to the season, the Casper College men’s rodeo team has climbed to the top of the Central Rocky Mountain Region standings.

Following its first-place finish two weeks ago at the Eastern Wyoming College Rodeo in Torrington, the red-vested Thunderbirds moved ahead of defending CRMR champ Sheridan College. Heading into this weekend’s rodeo at Colorado State University the T-Birds have 2,540 points, which puts them just five points ahead of the Generals.

With only three rodeos remaining in the season, though, Casper College and Sheridan College aren’t the only teams with an opportunity to finish in the top two and secure a spot in June’s College National Finals Rodeo at the Casper Events Center. Laramie County Community College is third with 2,510 points, followed by Gillette College (2,490), Chadron State College (2,225) and Central Wyoming College (2,130).

The T-Birds have earned the majority of their team points in team roping. Trey Yates and partner Kellan Johnson of Gillette College lead the event, with freshmen Wheaton Williams (Big Horn) and Jerren Johnson (Casper) sitting in second place.

Sheridan College, on the other hand, has garnered most of its points on the other end of the arena. Chance Ames and Hunter Carlson are first and third, respectively, in bareback bronc riding, with Lane Schuelke third in saddle bronc and Tyrell Ward fifth in bull riding.

On the women’s side Gillette College has all but locked up the regional title as the Pronghorns lead second-place Eastern Wyoming College by more than 1,300 points. The University of Wyoming Cowgirls are also in the mix, just two points back of Eastern Wyoming.

Gillette College has just one event leader – Riley Addington in barrel racing – but the Pronghorns’ Rickie Engesser and Taylour Latham are first and second, respectively, in the all-around standings and Quincy Segelke is third in breakaway roping.

The CRMR season continues in two weeks with Casper College’s Ropin’ and Riggin’ Days Rodeo and concludes the following week with the Laramie River Rendezvous at UW.
