Now is the time to shake off the winter blues and engage in a new level of fun fitness, designed to rejuvenate the mind and refresh a personal commitment to wellness.
In Wyoming, summer is short, and it is essential that we embrace the joys of warmer days. One of the biggest advantages of summer is the opportunity spend time outdoors, enjoying neighborhood barbecues, family vacations and relaxing picnics in the park. This summer take some time to put a fresh spin on your personal fitness plan. Among the possibilities, keep the following ideas in mind:
- Water activities: Aside from the health benefits, participating in water activities can provide cooling comfort on the hottest days. Summer is the optimal time of year to try kayaking, canoeing or water skiing – all of which are physically active and challenging. Check out your local community center, YMCA or recreation district for possibilities.
- Outdoor adventures: Take advantage of your surroundings. Many outdoor adventure activities are inexpensive and require very little equipment or expertise. Hiking or backpacking, for example, are great ways to get a workout while taking in a scenic view.
- Community events: Many communities host 5K run/walks, trail runs or hikes and mountain biking tours in the summer. These events are physically active and generally offer opportunities to socialize with friends and/or meet new people.
- Rise and shine: Summer is a great time to form a new habit of working out in the mornings. The sun is up to greet you and the early morning temperatures generally do not pose health risks. Exercising in the morning is also a great way to enjoy some peace and quiet before the rest of the world awakens. If you'd rather workout with friends or family, start a walking/running/biking (or other activity) club. Not only is it heart-healthy, but the social support a committed group can provide helps positively reinforce the personal fitness goals you set.
- Alfresco mind-body exercises: Yoga, Pilates, tai chi, qigong and Nia are just a few examples of mind-body activities typically conducted in a studio or gym. They require very little equipment and have enormous benefits for the mind, body and soul. Take it one step further and do these activities outside, such as in a park or your backyard. Doing these activities outside allows you to enjoy the fresh air, beautiful scenery and sounds of nature while you exercise. Shoot for early morning or evening, when the temperatures are not too hot.

Regardless of the activity, it is important to be mindful of simple safety tips when exercising outside in the summer. The human body is an efficient machine; however, the combination of extreme temperatures and exercise inhibits the body’s efficiency. Take the necessary precautions to facilitate optimal performance in an optimal environment. Stay hydrated, wear the appropriate clothing and protect your skin from the sun.
Whatever your mood, whatever your preference, find an activity – new or simply refreshed – that you enjoy and share it with your friends and family. Take advantage of what summer has to offer and enter the season with a rejuvenated appreciation of healthful living.
